English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL Class Schedule

Meaningful communication is the primary focus of instruction. Classes and materials are student centered and communication based. Oral communication for life situations is the foremost goal followed by correct grammar, spelling, and pronunciation. Curriculum is designed to be flexible based on individual needs. Teachers provide opportunities not only to learn from an instructor, but also for students to work together and find strength in each other and their experiences. Students work independently and interactively in pairs and small groups.

ESL Students

Have diverse language abilities
Have a desire to learn
Set definite educational goals
Come from a variety of countries, cultures and social economic backgrounds
Are usually part-time learners with additional responsibilities at home, on the job, or in the community

ESL Instructors

Help students learn and/or improve their English language skills
Adjust material to each student’s ability level
Provide opportunities for personal goal setting
Allow class time for student questions
Develop and nurture student self-esteem

ESL Classes

Are friendly
Are usually small
Offer open enrollment where students may attend at any time
Have a class syllabus which also contains instructor contact information
Offer an orientation session explaining class procedure, policies, rules and expectations
Are designed so students work independently, in pairs, small groups and large groups

ESL Curriculum

Ensures classes and materials are student-centered
Is designed to be flexible based on individual needs
Encourages oral communication about real life situations
Teaches pronunciation, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Requires a reading assessment which helps the instructor determine at which level to begin studies

ESL Fees

There is a class preparation fee of $25.00 per student per year
This fee may be waived due to financial hardship
