Course Description: A developmental writing course designed for students referred by orientation assessment or by instructors. Emphasis is on writing; students will learn strategies for recognizing and compensating for individual writing problems. Students complete the course by meeting the minimum entrance requirements for Composition & Speech I. Credit earned will not satisfy the requirements for an Associate Degree and will not be used in calculating the cumulative grade point average for graduation. This course has been designated as a pass/no pass course. (60-0)

Elements of Writing is a work-at-your-own-pace (within a fifteen week limit) course designed to introduce or reintroduce students to strategies for writing well, at the sentence, paragraph, and essay level, and includes attention to grammar and mechanics.

We will read essays from a text in order to identify writing strategies used by professional and student writers, and will emulate those strategies.

The writing in the course falls into two basic categories:

numerous short responses to subjects I propose or questions I ask in postings to the class discussion board, and
five to seven essays

We will cover the grammar and mechanics portion of the course by

my notes inserted in copies of writing you submit, which will explain the suggestions I have for revision and/or for review
use of a handbook for reference

use of websites that offer automatic scoring for exercises related to grammar and mechanics (punctuation and verb problem areas, for example) scores are used only for diagnostic and learning purposes and are not calculated into the grade for the semester.
