PIG SALE RESULTS
Pig’s In The Purple Sale Report for February 25, 2004
It was a warm February afternoon that preceded a hot 40th edition sale of
North Iowa Area Community College’s Pigs In the Purple Sales. A large crowd,
estimated at nearly one hundred, inspected and purchased a great set of show
pig prospects. The highlight of the sale was the 2 litter sired by You Can
Do It 24-8(out of Duelm ‘s powerful 24 litter) and the great 18-2 Hampshire
sow by Keep N Watch from Joe Lancaster. Eight pigs sold from this great
litter averaging $240 each. Spirited bidding resulted in a new record price
set for the NIACC sale on Lot 23 selling to Kurt Hartman for $500. The sale
total was $5440 on 50 head for an average sale price of $109 per head.
Thanks to all who participated in this year’s first show pig sale. Following

Pig Sale News
North Iowa Area Community College Agriculture students will
sponsor their annual Pigs In The Purple Sales on Tuesday, February 25, 2004
and Thursday, April 8, 2004. These sales are held on the NIACC campus in the
comfort of Room 104 in the Careers Building beginning at 6:15 PM. Viewing of
pigs begins at 5:00 PM. The NIACC campus is 2 miles east of Mason City on
Highway 122.
The successes of buyers over the past sixteen years has resulted in nearly
300 swine show championships and class winners. Pigs in last year’s sales
went on to be Champion Gateway Barrow at Freeborn Co Fair, Champion 4-H
Derby at Freeborn Co Fair, Class winner and $2500 Yorkshire Boar at the Iowa
State Fair. All pigs have been raised by the NIACC Farm Lab and have been
successful at all levels of competition, from local youth shows to national
swine shows. NIACC’s reputation for honest, high performing and highest
quality show pigs is indisputable, with pigs selling into 11different
states. The majority of pigs in the sale are sired by outstanding boars,
which have a history of producing show winners and superior carcasses. NIACC
students work with the agricultural technology staff and swine experts, to
carefully select sires to be mated to proven sows to produce the pigs for
each of these sales. In fact, many of the sows have produced past champions
or are littermates to previous show winners.
The “Pigs In the Purple Sales”, now in their seventeenth year, are sponsored
by Agricultural Technology students at NIACC and provides many 4-H and FFA
members the best opportunity to, obtain high quality show pigs for youth
projects at reasonable prices. These sales also give our students learning
opportunity to develop marketing skills through their involvement in all
phases of planning and executing the sales. A special thanks to this years
Animal Science II class, which, has sale management responsibilities.
We hope that you will join us for this year’s Pig’s In
The Purple Sales.
If you have any questions regarding the sale or show pigs,
please contact one of us at NIACC -- Chris Chodur at the farm-641-423-7888
or cell 641-201-0051 or Larry Eichmeier - 641-422-4225.
