Young Entrepreneurs
Seven out of 10 high school students want to start a business of their own, according to a Gallup Survey. Independence, as opposed to monetary gain, was sited as the primary motivation for wanting to become an entrepreneur.
Of course a majority of high school graduates don't in fact start their own businesses. NIACC hopes to increase the odds of some North Iowa youth realizing their entrepreneurial dreams through the EntrePrep Institute.
Approximately 20 area high school juniors were selected to participate in the Institute offered this summer through NIACC's John Pappajohn Business and Entrepreneurial Center.
The intensive 7-day residential program teaches students the various stages of new business formation - focusing on the development of skills, knowledge and attitudes. Students also complete a 150-hour internship with a local entrepreneurial firm and attend entrepreneurial workshops during their senior year.
Upon successful completion of the EntrePrep program, graduates receive a $1000 college scholarship from the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and are designated as Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Scholars. Graduates choosing NIACC first receive an additional $500 scholarship.
