Lifelong Learning with NIACC NOW
Imagine a school without grades or tests, a place where the only prerequisites are an active mind and a desire to learn. Now imagine a program in which the class offerings are designed with the older learner in mind. North Iowans age 55 and better do not have to imagine any longer - its here.
NIACC NOW (New Opportunities for the Wise) classes are non-credit offerings designed specifically for North Iowans age 55 and better.
Nancy Gilman, along with representatives from First Citizens National Bank, coordinated the first group of classes last spring. These 13 original classes were based upon expressed individual interests and increased to 23 offerings ranging from earth-friendly gardening to surfin the net.
During that first term, 216 individuals enrolled in classes, far surpassing Gilmans expectations, with over half (125) enrolling in the widely popular computer classes. "I really think that people are interested in these computer classes because they want to be a part of the changing technology," said Gilman. "They really have a thirst for learning."
In addition, Gilman said many students in the classes are eager to learn to use a computer so they can communicate with their children and grandchildren via e-mail.
Computer classes are not the only popular offering. Students in Dale Harmons American Literature class enjoyed themselves so much last spring they kept right on attending throughout the summer even though there was no official class in session.
Husband and wife Gail and Miriam Bailey have taken a number of NIACC NOW classes and are members of Harmons class. Miriam, a retired substitute teacher, attributes the success of the class to the interesting stories and quality of instruction. "There are so many neat people in the class who bring a broad range of experience and knowledge to our discussions," she said. "
Gail, a retired elementary school principal, agrees with his wife. "Reading and discussing these interesting stories has definitely widened my horizons," he said. "I have truly enjoyed it." The Baileys have decided to continue taking the American Literature class as for as long as it is offered and look forward to taking additional NIACC NOW classes.
After the huge success of the spring semester, Gilman increased the offerings to 35 classes - 26 of those to accommodate the large number of individuals interested in taking a computer class. The result? Nearly 375 individuals enrolled last fall and Gilman expects this trend to continue. "I think these classes really tie in with peoples social activities," said Gilman. "Its really a great opportunity for interactive learning."
In coordinating the classes for last fall, Gilman contacted some individuals who had never considered teaching. Rich Dean, a local jazz musician and member of the Raiders of the Lost Art, taught a class on jazz music and was surprised when Gilman approached him about the possibility. "I have always had a deep interest in jazz and decided that teaching would be an excellent way to expose more people to it," he said.
NIACC NOW classes offer unique learning experiences for instructors as well as students, according to Dean. "I have found that in order to be a jazz lover you have to educate yourself," he said, "and I knew I would probably learn a lot myself from teaching the class."
Deans students brought a variety of jazz experience to class and each got something different from it. "I think that the students really enjoyed themselves and left the class with a greater appreciation for jazz," he said.
The program has been fulfilling for students, instructors and its coordinator. "There is such a wide variety of people at all different ages and its so rewarding to see the participants enjoying themselves. Im jealous that Im not taking a class!" said Gilman.
NIACC is again offering a wide variety of classes this spring through NIACC NOW. Course schedules will be available in March.
