Nearly 300 science lovers converged on the NIACC campus in April to share information and learn more about, what else?, science. From "Small Comments and Atmospheric Holes" to "Engineering Aspects of Renewable Energy in Iowa" to "Chemistry Demonstrations to Knock Your Socks Off"...you name it, they had it at the 110th Annual Meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science (IAS).
All in all, approximately 100 guest presenters from around the state shared information from 14 different academic program areas including agricultural science, anthropology, botany, cellular and molecular biology, chemical education, chemistry, conservation, engineering, geology, physics, physiology, psychology and linguistics, science teaching, and zoology.
Special attractions included a 1932 "Wincharger," an electricity-generating wind turbine from UNI, and Iowa State's Solar Car.
The IAS Annual Meeting, which has been hosted just one other time by a community college in the past 110 years, is attended by Iowa K-12 science teachers as well as instructors and researchers from Iowa's two and four-year colleges and universities.
