Dan Mason
- Athletic Director
Dan Mason became athletic director at North Iowa Area
Community College in July 2006, his second time serving in athletics at the
school. Since his arrival, he has already made an impact on the school's
athletic program, which includes 10 sports and approximately 240
student-athletes. He also teaches a sports management class at the school.
Mason was instrumental in helping reinstate the NIACC wrestling program, which
had been in existence from 1967 to 1976 and won a national championship in 1973.
The Trojans hired head coach Richard Fergola and competed in the 2007-08
academic year. Mason was also involved in
the planning of a new athletic facility that began construction in August, 2008.
A Chicago native, Mason earned his undergraduate degree from North Park College
(now University) in 1983. He starred for the team's conference-winning baseball
team in 1983, setting a school record for wins and earning second-team NCAA
Division III All-America honors. He was later named to the school's Athletic
Hall of Fame in 1988.
After leaving Chicago, Mason went to Minnesota State University - Mankato where
he earned his athletic administration Masters Degree in 1985 and served as an
assistant coach for the school's men's basketball program under Dan McCarrell.
Mason became the head men’s basketball coach at Waldorf College in nearby Forest
City in 1985, a position he held for eight years. In 1993, he took over as head
basketball coach for NIACC, serving in that role for four years. In 1995, he was
named National Junior College Athletic Association Coach of the Year, after
guiding the Trojans to a 24-12 record and a NJCAA Division II national
championship.
Most recently, Mason served in a variety of role at Central College in Pella,
beginning there in 1998 as the school's head men's basketball coach and later
serving as the director of the Central College sports club, while continuing as
an instructor.
Mason and wife Kay have three children Alison, Kevin, and Tyler.
