Gold Evens Series With 4-1 Victory

The Gold team evened the 2009 NIACC Baseball Blue/Gold World Series with a 4-1 victory on Friday. Gold hurler Colin Morgan (Stanley, IA) went five strong innings, giving up his lone run in the first inning. Morgan only walked one and struck out two.

The Blue looked like they were on there way to a commanding 2-0 series lead from the get-go, as SS Tim Mettert (Chanhassen, MN) smacked a lead-off single. Mettert would score on a Spenser Popinga (Mason City, IA) single to take a early 1-0 lead.

The Gold came back with an answer as Jordan Rishavy (Rochester, MN) drew a two-out walk. Rishavy stole second and was driven in on a Scott Welter (Cedar Falls, IA) RBI single to even the score.

In the Gold half of the third, Shaun McGuire (Bancroft, IA) drew a lead-off walk. Taylor Ingles (Waterloo, IA) singled, then Brad Denning (Cedar Falls, IA) drove in McGuire on a single to make it 2-1.

The Gold extended the lead in the fourth with back-to-back doubles by Welter and Kody McDowell (Corpus Christi, TX) and another single from Ingles to make it 4-1.

Scott Welter nailed down the victory for the Gold with two shutout innings to pick up the save.

Kody Loertscher (Rib Lake, WI) took the loss for the Blue.

Game three is set for Monday at 3:00 p.m. Tyler Carter (Iowa City, IA) will take the mound for the Blue, while Gold has yet to determine there starter.
