It started as a player at Lost Nation where he scored 1,815 career points, including a career-high 48 points in December of 1982.
As a high school coach, he guided the Osage Green Devils for eight years, compiling a 109-70 record.
Next up for Mohl is a chance to coach at the collegiate level.
The first-year NIACC coach makes his collegiate debut tonight when the Trojans host Anoka-Ramsey in the Konigsmark Klassic.
“The college game is a little different,” Mohl said. “There’s the athletic ability and the stuff behind the scenes, but games are still won and lost at the defensive end and with rebounding.”
Mohl spent last year as a volunteer assistant for coach Bryan Martin, who took an assistant coaching job at North Dakota.
The former Osage elementary school teacher called last year “just fun to be able to tag along.”
He wasn’t exactly thinking it would be a year in which he would learn the ins and outs of junior college basketball in preparation for a head coaching job.
Nevertheless, Mohl gladly accepts the challenge.
One of Mohl and his coaching staff’s main points of emphasis was to have plenty of depth at their disposal when practice began.
They certainly did that.
Glancing at the NIACC roster, it looks more like a football roster than a basketball roster.
As of Thursday night, the Trojans had 22 players on their roster.
“We’ve got a lot of kids that can play,” Mohl said. “We’re trying to hammer into them how hard they have to play.”
One of the players who Mohl has his own scouting report on is sophomore guard Nate Haaland.
Haaland, an Osage prep, played his entire high school career under Mohl.
While he wasn’t Haaland’s coach last season, Mohl said it’s evident how much his game has improved since high school.
“I think he learned how physical and how quick the kids are in the guard court at this level,” Mohl said. “I definitely think he’s came a long way. We’re looking for good things out of him.”
That optimism stretches across the Trojans roster on the heels of a 12-19 season.
“Every game is its own challenge,” Mohl said. “I’m not going to tie a win number to it. We are going to be competitive and get after it.”
