Chris Clausen, a native Australian, scored 30 points and hauled in eight rebounds to lead the Trojans to a 96-75 win over Milestone Prep of Kansas City.
Fellow Australian Max Papendieck added 19 points and four steals.
“This was a fast-paced first two games,” NIACC coach Mark Mohl said. “Our offense is set for anyone to score.”
The offensive rhythm for both teams was elusive as both struggled with signs of the start of the season — turnovers and fouls.
For the game, the two teams combined for 60 personal fouls and 35 turnovers.
With so many fouls, the free-throw line was going to be crucial to the outcome, and the Trojans were more than equal to the task.
NIACC made 27-of-35 attempts from the line for a 77 percent clip.
The Kings made just 18 of their 34 attempts.
The Trojans also enjoyed a plus-11 advantage on the boards and had nine more steals than Milestone.
Clausen scored 19 of his 30 points in a first half that saw the Trojans build a 17-point halftime advantage.
The 6-foot-6 forward was 11-of-19 from the floor, including 3-for-6 on three-point attempts.
Kyle Cooper added 11 points for NIACC while KJay Jackson, a freshman from Waterloo East, added 10 points in a reserve role.
After a pair of convincing victories to start the season, Mohl is now looking to fine tune his team.
“We need to work defensively on moving our feet,” Mohl said. “We also need to push the tempo more.”
The Trojans (2-0) return to the court on Tuesday when they host Riverland Community College.
