NIACC Rewind 2006


December 18

The North Iowa Area Community College women’s basketball team headed into Christmas break with a 6-8 overall record after splitting a pair of games this week. The Trojans defeated visiting Rochester Community and Technical College 40-37 last Monday before losing 83-65 at Marshalltown Community College on Saturday.

In the Rochester contest, freshman guard Gina Howard of Merrillville, IN/HS) scored nine points and sophomore forward Saira Morgan (Anamosa/HS) tallied seven to lead coach John Oertel’s team. NIACC took a 21-13 halftime lead and held on with the help of 15 of 26 foul shooting. Kasie Heimer made 9 of 10 field goals for 18 points to lead the visitors.

Against Marshalltown in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play, the Trojans received 11 points from Morgan. Sophomore guards Jordan Stiles (Rockwell/Rockwell-Swaledale) and KaeAnne Wood (Atlantic/HS) scored nine points for NIACC, now 1-2 in ICCAC play.

In men’s basketball, NIACC’s 15th-rated squad dropped a 75-66 home non-conference decision to Iowa Western to head into Christmas break with a 9-3 overall mark, 1-0 in ICCAC Division II play. Sophomore forward Yusuf Vinson (Lincoln, NE/HS) led coach Bryan Martin’s team with 14 points despite getting into foul trouble and missing much of the first half.

Martin’s backup big men, freshman Willie Foote (Omaha, NE/Benson) and sophomore Ryan Sones (Laurens/Laurens-Marathon) combined for 18 points and helped keep NIACC close in the first half. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Greg Smalls totaled 13 points and freshman guard Jeff Loats (Belmond/Belmond-Klemme) had eight points off the bench as the Trojans narrowed a 10-point halftime deficit before falling.

On January 6, both NIACC teams will play at Des Moines Area Community College in Boone as the Trojans continue play in the ICCAC. The women’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the men’s contest will follow at approximately 6 p.m.

In a football note pertaining to a past NIACC athlete, offensive lineman Marshal Yanda was one of two players honored with the Roy J. Carver Most Valuable Player award at the team’s annual awards banquet. Yanda, who played two years in the Trojans football program, started all 12 games for the Hawkeyes, who finished 6-6 overall. The senior was named second-team All-Big 10 by the media recently. He was co-MVP with Hawkeyes linebacker Mike Kinkenborg.

Yanda will play one more game for Iowa as the Hawkeyes were invited to play the University of Texas in the Alamo Bowl on December 30 in San Antonio.

Two NIACC football players received NJCAA All-American honors this week as defensive back Anton Cullom of Waynesville, MO earned first-team honors and quarterback Ben Alford of Dade City, FL earned honorable mention.  

Cullom had nine interceptions – second in the nation – and returned three for touchdowns to key NIACC’s defense during a 7-4 season. His forced fumble late in the Midwest Football Conference West championship game helped seal a 20-19 win over Iowa Central and earn the Trojans a berth in the Graphic Edge Bowl at the University of Northern Iowa’s UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Cullom’s efforts earned him MFC Defensive Player of the Year honors.

 Alford was named Offensive Player of the Year in the MFC and was among the nation’s leaders in total offense. He was seventh in MFC rushing and fourth in passing, throwing at a 54 percent completion rate for head coach Scott Strohmeier’s team.  

In women’s basketball action, NIACC defeated Ellsworth 62-50 on Wednesday in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference action before dropping a 54-46 decision at home to Southeastern Saturday afternoon. The Trojans (5-7, 1-1) host Rochester Tech in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m. tonight. 

In the Ellsworth game, sophomore Saira Morgan (Anamosa/HS) scored 17 points while freshman Katie Bormann (Fredrickson/Sumner-Fredrickson) added 15 points to help the visiting Trojans open ICCAC play successfully. Sophomore Amber Riesenberg (Lake City/Southern Cal) contributed seven points for NIACC, which held Ellsworth to just 19 field goals. 

Against Southeastern, Morgan was force inside, scoring a game-high 14 points and making 5 of 8 field goals, while grabbing seven rebounds. She had nine of her points as the Trojans took a 26-16 halftime edge. NIACC ended the half on a 12-2 run in the final 5:51 as sophomore KaeAnna Wood (Atlantic/HS) scored six points in a span of 1:29.  

During the second half, however, the Trojans went six minutes without a point as Southeastern took the lead and Alisha Brennon scored 11 of her 13 points after intermission to lead the Blackhawk's to the comeback win. Bormann supported Morgan offensively with 10 points and six rebounds and Wood finished with eight points for coach John Oertel’s team, which will play at Marshalltown in a 1 p.m. game Saturday before taking off for Christmas vacation.

 In men’s basketball, the Trojans moved to 9-2 with an 87-73 ICCAC win at Ellsworth Wednesday. NIACC hosts Iowa Western at 7 p.m. Thursday before taking off for Christmas. Freshman Greg Smalls (Charleston, SC/West Ashley) scored a collegiate-best 19 points to help the Trojans break away after being tied 34-all at halftime. 

Sophomore post players Yusuf Vinson (Lincoln, NE/High) and Max Stambaugh (Mason City/HS) added 15 and 12 points respectively as the Trojans won their ICCAC opener. Sophomore De’Lain Riley (Waterloo/East) and freshman Jeff Loats (Belmond/Belmond-Klemme) had nine points apiece for coach Bryan Martin’s squad.

Women’s Basketball – The NIACC Lady Trojan’s saw their record drop a game .500 during non-conference action last week. (3-4)
NIACC opened the week by defeating Riverland Community College of Austin Minnesota, 55-43. NIACC took control of the action midway through the first half and survived a late rally from Riverland to secure the victory.

Leading the way for NIACC were post players, Saira Morgan (So. Anamosa, IA) and Maddie Biggs (FR Lincoln Neb.) Morgan tallied 15 points and Biggs chipped in 10.
The NIACC Women headed north for a rematch with Anoka-Ramsey of Minnesota attempting to sweet the season series from Anoka. The Lady Trojan’s came up just short, losing a hard fought 55-50 decision. Morgan again led the attack with 23 points for NIACC.
The extended road trip continues this week with a Wednesday night contest at Rochester Community College, tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. 
 

Men’s Basketball – The NIACC Men’s Basketball team improved it’s records to 6-2 on the season with a couple of impressive non-conference victories the past week.
Tuesday night saw NIACC race past Riverland 117-52. NIACC started the contest on a 10-0 run and never looked back.
On Saturday the Trojans traveled to suburban Minneapolis to play Anoka-Ramsey for the second time in the early season. NIACC continued the offensive energy as they posted a 94-52 victory. Yusef Vinson (So. Lincoln Neb.) Set the tone with 15 points, he was joined in double digits by four of his teammates.

NIACC returns to action on Wednesday night with a non-conference game at Rochester Community College, game time is 8:00 p.m.

 

November 13, 2006

Cross Country- A recent trip to Nationals in El Paso, Texas saw the men finish 12th in the country. Sophomore Zach Bales-Henry led the way by being named to the United States Coaches All-American Team. For the women Stacy Waddle was the top place winner.

Football- The Trojans are preparing to play in the Graphic Edge bowl game at the UNI dome Sunday November 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Men’s Hoops
-  The Men saw their record go to 2-2 on Saturday, the Trojans beat Grace College 84 to 79  in a hard fought battle. The Trojans were lead by Yusuf Vinson who had 18 pts and 8 rebounds in 40 minutes of work. The Men’s next game is this Friday in the Johnson Financial Services Classic at 8:00p.m and again on Saturday at 6:00

Women’s Hoops - The Women saw their record drop to 1-2 on Tuesday night in a hard fought 56-59 lost to Iowa Western Community College. Amber Riesenberg led the way for the Lady Trojans with 11 points. Play this weekend in the Johnson Financial Services Classic at 6:00p.m on Friday and then again at 4:00p.m on Saturday.

Football – Sophomore quarterback Ben Alford led the way to postseason play for the NIACC Trojans last Saturday at Mohawk Field in Mason City. Alford threw for 184 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 26 yards.
Perhaps the key play of the game came early in the second half, when freshman punter Preston Peterson boomed a kick from his own 18 yard line that finally ended up at the Ellsworth 10 yard line. From that point on the Trojans dominated field position  and never looked back, outscoring the Panthers 28-0 in the second half. The Trojans travel to Iowa Central next week for the Western Conference Championship game.
Kickoff is set for noon at Dodger Stadium in Fort Dodge.

Volleyball – The Lady Trojans went 1-1 the past week. Dominating Pillsbury College 3-0 in the home finale and then dropped a hard fought contest at Southwestern Community College on Thursday evening in Creston.
NIACC begins regional play on Tuesday night with a 7:00p.m match at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls.

Cross Country – After seeing the men place 2nd and the women 3rd in the regional meet, both squads have been busy preparing for the National Meet in El Paso, Texas on November 4th.

Soccer – The Soccer team put forth a valiant effort in regional playoffs, before falling to Iowa Central 3-2 last Wednesday in Fort Dodge. The Trojans showed great last in the season and finished with an overall record of 6-11-1.

 October 23, 2006

Soccer- The soccer team stormed from behind to claim a 6-3 victory over Pillsbury College Saturday at the NIACC Athletic Complex. Earlier in the week the Trojans lost a hard fought match to Iowa Western 3-2.
NIACC now stands at 6-10-1 on the season and begin Regional play Wednesday, when they visit Iowa Central in the Regional Tournament.

Volleyball- The Lady Trojan volleyball team sported a 1-2 record last week, losing to Ellsworth C.C. (2-3) and Marshalltown C.C. (0-3), while defeating Pillsbury College (3-1) NIACC has a record of (14-19) on the season.
The Lady Trojans return to action Tuesday evening when they host Pillsbury College in a 7:00p.m match at the NIACC Gymnasium.

Football- It will be a showdown on Saturday October 28th in Mason City, as NIACC and Ellsworth will meet with a playoff berth on the line in a 1:00p.m kickoff at Mohawk Stadium.
NIACC lost a 35-33 heartbreaker at Harper Community College last Saturday in Chicago. NIACC fell behind early 28-0 and spent most the afternoon trying to comeback, only to fall just short. The Trojans we let by sophomore quarterback Ben Alford who passed for 217 yards, while rushing for 124.
NIACC has a 503 record on the season and a victory in Saturday’s Parent Day game will assure them a trip to Iowa Central and a playoff game on Saturday November 4th.

Cross Country- NIACC Dan Mayer won the Region XI Men’s Cross Country Championship Saturday in Estherville. Mayer was named the regions “Runner of the Year” and gained first team all region honors.
NIACC finished in second place and also placed Zach Bales-Henry on the first team all region squad. Beau Woosley, Andrew Townsend and Jeremiah Yassin were honored as second team all region performers.
On the Women’s side the Trojans placed third in the team standing. The Lady Trojans placed Roxanne Soesbe on the first team and Stacy Waddle on the second team all region.
Both teams are now preparing for the National meet to be held in El Paso, Texas on November 4th.

 

October 15

Soccer- The Men’s Soccer team capped off a successful week with a record setting performance. The Trojans defeated Cornerstone College of Rochester Minnesota 18-0 on Saturday afternoon. Eric Pozzani set a record for NIACC, recording nine goals in the match.
Pazzoni moved his career goal total to twenty-six also a NIACC record. The victory moved the Trojans to 5-9-1 on the season. NIACC will look for more success when they travel to Council Bluffs to play Iowa Western on Wednesday. They then return home portion of the schedule next Saturday, hosting Pillsbury College in a 3:00 p.m. match at the NIACC Athletic Complex.

Volleyball- The Lady Trojans went one and one in match play this weekend. NIACC lost to DMACC 0-3 on Monday night in Boone and then rebounded with a five set victory over the Wartburg J.V. on Wednesday night in Waverly.
They finished a busy week going two and two at the Ellsworth Invitational. The Lady Trojans host Ellsworth in a league action on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Football- The NIACC football team improved to 5-2 on the season by defeating Rock Valley 42-21  Saturday night at Mohawk Stadium.
Freshman running back Tommy Bryant set the pace, rushing for 179 yards and two touchdowns in the homecoming victory.
NIACC entered the further quarter tied at fourteen, but the Trojans exploded for twenty eight points to run away from the Eagles.
Cornerback Anton Cullom recorded his seventh and eighth interception of the season. On his eighth interception he picked off a Rock Valley pass and racing fifty five yards for a touchdown that extended the lead to 53-14 to seal the victory.

Cross Country- The Trojans took a weekend off from competition as the set their sights on the upcoming ICCAC Championships, October 21st at Iowa Lakes.

 

October 1, 2006

Volleyball – The Lady Trojan Volleyball Team concluded the week by posting a 2-2 record at the College of Dupage Tournament in suburban Chicago. NIACC dropped hard fought matches to Oakton and Harper and posted victories against Lake County and South Suburban. The Lady Trojans return to action this Wednesday, hosting Iowa Lakes in the ICCAC at the NIACC Gym. The match begins at 7:00p.m.

Cross Country – An of weekend saw the NIACC Men’s Cross Country team move up in the National rankings. The NIACC men are currently ranked 11th in the country, moving up seven sports in the NJCAA. The men and the women return to action on Saturday October 7 at the Dan Huston Invitational at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

Soccer – The men’s soccer team dropped a pair of matches this past week, losing 6-0 to Dakota County on Wednesday and then stumbling 6-1 to Madison Tech, on Saturday. The Trojans stand at 4-7 on the season and host perennial power Iowa Central in a 3:00p.m match on Wednesday October 4th at NIACC.

Football – An interesting start to the second half propelled the NIACC football team to an exciting come from behind victory on Saturday. NIACC trialed 13-0 after the first quarter and fell behind 20-0 before mounting a furious comeback, outscoring Grand Rapids Community College 34-5 the rest of the game. With The defense scoring twice to start the second half for the Trojans. Cornerback Anton Cullom got things rolling by taking an interception into the end zone from 17 yards out, on the next series it was Strong Safety Corey Robertson’s turn to have some fun. Robertson scooped up a fumble and rambled 15 yards for the score. NIACC improves to 4-1 on the season and travels to Joliet Illinois for a 1:00p.m showdown with Eastern Division leaders, Joliet Junior College next Saturday.

 

September 24, 2006

Cross Country- The Men’s and the Women’s Cross Country teams traveled to Rock Island, Illinois for the  2006 Augustana College Brissman - Lundeen Cross County Meet on Friday September 22nd. The trip was well worth it as the men finished in ninth place overall in a field of thirty nine teams. That finish was good enough to claim first place in the Junior College Division. Leading the way for the Trojans was Dan Mayer in 26th place, also in the top fifty was Zach Bales-Henry who finished 41st in the field of 450 competitors.The men’s team is currently rated 19th in the latest NJCAA national rankings. On the women’s side the Lady Trojan’s also enjoyed a positive trip, finishing 4th in the Junior College Division and 24th overall. Setting the pace by finishing in the top 100 were Roxanne Soesbe (88) and Elly Meyer (99). The teams return to action on October 7th at the Don Huston Invitational in a Waverly, Iowa

Volleyball- The Lady Trojans swept Riverland College from Austin, Minnesota Friday night September 22nd, 3 games to 0. The victory evened the season record at 8-8 and was a positive ending to a busy week. In earlier action NIACC was swept by Kirkwood Community College and lost a hard fought match (2-3) to the Wartburg College junior varsity.  The Lady Trojans return to play with a home match on Monday September 25th against Marshalltown Community College. The action begins at 7:00p.m.

Soccer- The men’s soccer team went 1-1 during the past week loosing to Iowa Western on Wednesday 5-0 and then finishing in a  big way, beating Crossroads College 12-0 on Saturday. The Crossroads victory improved the Trojan’s record to 4-5 for the season and saw seven different players score goals. NIACC returns to action with home matches on Wednesday and Saturday this week.

Saturday - Madison Area - 3:00p.m.

Football- The NIACC football team improved to 3-1 on the season with a hard fought 6-0 victory at The College of Dupage Saturday September 23rd in Chicago. The game was played in a driving rain and defense was the key to the day, with the Trojan’s recording their second straight shutout.The offense was lead by quarterback Ben Alford, who rushed for 123 yard. Running back Tommy Bryant Chipped in 43 yard and scored on the game’s only touchdown. NIACC returns home for a 1:00p.m start this Saturday against the perennial Juco power Grand Rapids of Michigan.

 

September 17, 2006

Football- The Trojans rolled to a non-conference victory against the William Penn Junior Varsity Sunday afternoon at Mohawk Field in Mason City. It was all NIACC in the 40-0 victory as Tommy Bryant led the way with four touchdowns and 123 yards rushing. NIACC quarterbacks Ben Alford and Wes Brummel combined to go 11 of 16 totaling 162 yards passing.
NIACC improves to 2 and 1 on the season and travel to Chicago next week to take on the college of Dupage Saturday, Kickoff is set for 1:00p.m.

Volleyball- NIACC ended a tough week on a positive note, defeating Clinton Community College in IJCAA action Sunday afternoon 3 games to 1 at the NIACC athletic complex.
Earlier in the week, NIACC came out on the short end in three matches, losing to Iowa Lakes, Ellsworth and Southeastern Community College. The Trojans record now stands at 7-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
NIACC returns to action on Tuesday night, hosting the Kirkwood Eagles, match time is set for 7:00p.m

Men’s Soccer- The week saw the Trojan men record a 1 and 1 record. They were outscored on Wednesday at Marshalltown 8-0 and were award a 1-0 forfeit victory at Scott County Community College on Saturday afternoon. NIACC returns to action Wednesday September 20th with a 4:00p. match against Iowa Western Community College on the NIACC campus.
The Trojans are currently 3-4 over and 1-4 in the conference.
