Women's Basketball


 John Oertel

Head Coach

Coach Oertel joined the NIACC women's basketball program in 1984, bringing with him a wide variety of playing and coaching experience. A Mason City native, Oertel played football and basketball for the Trojans before transferring to Marshall University in West Virginia and then to Iowa State University. Under Oertel's leadership, the women's basketball team has consistently received top four seeding in the regional tournament and national recognition, most recently placing sixth at the National Tournament in 1994. In addition to his coaching duties, Oertel also teaches physical education classes at the College. Coach Oertel has recorded over 400 wins during his years at NIACC. He has helped place 27 players at four year basketball programs, including 7 at Division I programs and 14 at Division 2 programs. Oertel received his associate's degree from NIACC, his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and his master's degree from the University of Iowa.

Kelli Terrell

Assistant Coach

Coach Terrell joins the Lady Trojans coaching staff after spending the last 3 years under Coach Lisa Bluder as manager of the University of Iowa Women’s basketball team. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Health and Sports Studies while interning with Iowa Strength and Conditioning. Originally from Peterson, IA, Terrell attended NIACC and played basketball for Coach Oertel from 2003-2005 and was named Female Student Athlete of the Year following her sophomore season. Terrell’s responsibilities will include guard development as well as strength and conditioning.


 

Hilleri Jennings

Assistant Coach

 
   Coach Jennings brings not only her coaching skills to the NIACC team, but also her own personal college ball experience. Jennings, a native of Manly, IA. played basketball at neighboring Waldorf College from 1997-1999, and then at the University of Iowa for the 2000 & 2001 seasons. Jennings earned her degree in Social Work, and currently is the Executive Director of the Mason City Downtown Association. Coach Jennings responsibilities will include post play development and defense.
