With only seven players in uniform for the Konigsmark Classic, playing on consecutive days was going to take a toll.
On Saturday, the Lady Trojans were outscored 39-26 in the second half and fell to Anoka-Ramsey 76-57.
“Our energy level is high, and I love it,” NIACC coach John Oertel said. “Maintaining it is hard to do. We seem to work twice as hard as we have to.”
The Lady Trojans were able to stay with the Rams by aggressively attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line on the offensive end.
NIACC shot 22.4 percent from the floor for the game, but the Lady Trojans were able to offset that by getting to the line for 41 attempts. They made 28.
A flurry of three-point baskets in the middle of the second half ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.
“We are trying to use our athleticism to get to the free-throw line,” Oertel said.
Angy Gavere led all scorers with 22 points for Anoka-Ramsey, including three 3-pointers in the second half run.
Nicole Eenhuis, a former Mason City High School prep, led the Lady Trojans with 19 points.
Tiffany Braun added 11.
Karen Ott, a former Rockford prep, added eight points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Trojan roster is expected to get a boost in the coming days with at least two additional players being game ready.
“It will take a while to see where everyone fits,” Oertel said. “It’s early.”
NIACC (0-3) plays host to Riverland Community College on Tuesday.
