The Lady Trojans enter the first semester with seven eligible players.
“It’s not like it’s going to be — ‘Coach, when do I get to go in?’ ” Oertel said. “They’re going to go back in as soon as they’re rested.”
NIACC (0-1) hosts Illinois Central and Anoka-Ramsey tonight and Saturday at the Konigsmark Klassic in the NIACC gym.
Despite the low number of eligible players, Oertel said he and his players are taking a positive approach to the 2008-09 season.
“We are who we are right now,” the veteran coach said. “Seven is what we have and we’re not feeling sorry for ourselves.
“I like the attitude that they bring to every practice. They’re doing the work.”
Sophomores Tiffany Braun and DeAubrey Johnson return to lead the Lady Trojans, who dropped a 70-60 decision to the William Penn junior varsity last week.
Four of the five freshmen are from the North Iowa area, including former Mason City prep Nicole Eenhuis.
“Tiffany scored 21 against William Penn so obviously she’s taken the initiative to be a scorer,” Oertel said. “But we can get scoring from the others as well.
“Nicole Eenhuis definitely can put up big numbers as can Karen Ott and Amy Boley. They all have skills to put points on the board.”
Despite the low numbers, Oertel said he still wants to play an up-tempo game.
“We want to get out and press,” the coach said. “Even though we only have seven, they’re very aggressive and work hard.
“To not allow them to go full court that would take away from some of the skills that they have.”
While the off-campus recruiting for the 2008-09 season is over, Oertel said he’d still take players that are already on campus.
“I hope some of their classmates come out and watch them play, like what they see and want to give it a try,” Oertel said.
