Women's Basketball

Philosophy

Lady Trojan basketball success is build on three fundamental principles. Number one is total team effort. The Lady Trojans have always emphasized the use of a deep roster to implement their full court offensive and defensive pressure game. The Lady Trojan coaches want to recruit players who have the mentality of wanting to contribute to the success of the team and not just individual recognition. Players learn early that to be an integral part of the team requires wanting to become a “team player.” The team concept extends beyond the basketball court with players planning many off the court social activities together.

The second fundamental principle is an aggressive defensive style of play the has become characteristic of Lady Trojan basketball. The Lady Trojans basic defensive system is a man/man full court trapping defense. The coaching staff stresses that aggressive defense play creates offensive opportunities in “bunches.” NIACC players are coached to pressure the ball, take away passing lanes and crash the boards hard. The philosophy is to make the offense team HAVE TO BEAT the defense on every possession for 40 minutes. We will “gamble on defense” but we will never give up an easy basket.

The third principle in the Lady Trojan basketball foundation is in our fast break and secondary fast break offensive. We will push the ball up the court and look for a “ numbers advantage” and a quick score. Our secondary fast break offense is the key in every possession. It will flow into our basic half court four -out, one- in offensive package which stresses breaking the defense down with player movement, ball reversal and dribble penetration by all five offensive players. Players are coached to be aggressive ball handlers and shooters. We want to get more than “our share” of the shots in every game.

If you believe that you can fit into this, the Lady Trojan philosophy of playing basketball, we encourage you to contact the Lady Trojan coaching staff by e-mail at oertejoh@niacc.edu or call at 641-422-4316. Best of luck to you and your team this season. We hope you to hear from you.

A Proud History

With consistent, competitive play, the women's basketball program at NIACC has proven to be one of the better programs in the state and country. They have made several appearances at the National Tournament - placing as high as second - and have recorded winning season nearly every year since the sport began at NIACC in 1973.

Lady Trojan Basketball means fast-breaking offense and full-court "in your face" pressure defense. They play 30 regular season games against eight schools in the Iowa conference, plus games against out-of-state competition from Kansas, Missouri, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Illinois.

The team plays their games on a beautiful wooden parquet floor in a gymnasium seating approximately 2000 fans. In addition to the main gym, the players train in a spacious weight room which offers a full Nautilus circuit of 20 stations to athletes and an auxiliary gymnasium for both in- and off-season training. Locker rooms, an equipment room, an athletic room and coaches' offices complete the indoor athletic facilities.

The Lady Trojans are not only proud of their athletic ability, but also of their academic achievements. Players' names consistently appear on the Dean's List and the team has had numerous individuals receive Academic All-American and even Distinguished Academic All-American honors.

The coaching staff makes it a point to recruit North Iowa' s finest athletes in an effort to keep the community interest and involvement with the team's success. Athletes from all over have found NIACC to be an exciting place to begin their academic and athletic careers.

The NIACC women's basketball team competes at the NJCAA Division II level which enables the College to offer partial athletic scholarships to selected athletes. In addition, student-athletes may earn scholarships for academic achievement offered through the College.
