The 42nd annual Quodlibet variety show presented by North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) will take place on Thursday, April 20; Friday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 23 at 2:00 p.m. in the North Iowa Community Auditorium on the NIACC campus.
Featuring members of the NIACC Concert Choir and NIACC Singers, Quodlibet 42 is themed “Sing.” According to Director Jayson Ryner, “The strength of this year’s vocal ensembles is in their ability to harmonize and blend together to make fantastic music. We have chosen choral arrangements and different renditions of songs to feature these great singers.”
The show title is from the opening song “Sing” written and performed by the Vocal group Pentatonix. Contemporary and collegiate a cappella is featured repeatedly in this year’s Quodlibet.
“We have an a cappella version of Bohemian Rhapsody as well as a cappella settings of music by Marvin Gaye, Toto, and music from Pitch Perfect,” said Ryner.
The show also includes music from Kansas, Aretha Franklin, the B 52’s, and many more. Ryner added, “Some of my favorite numbers are things that the students have altered greatly from the original. We have a funky groove and melody set to Vanilla Ice’s Rap ‘Ice, Ice, Baby,’ a Disney Medley done with Ukelele, and an original arrangement of Hallelujah, With You.”
The NIACC Vocal Department has had a banner year with a debut performance of their new Holiday Feature “Holiday Pops” and has been well received at performances in the community. Featuring over 60 musicians from all over North Iowa, surrounding states, and international students, the vocal program at NIACC has been identified as one of the strongest community college programs in the upper midwest.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the two Mason City Hy-Vee locations, at the door, or by calling the NIACC Box Office (641-422-4188) or toll-free (1-888-466-4222, ext. 4188).
