North Iowa Area Community College offers five career programs in the health care field. These programs are: Medical Assistant, Medical Lab Technician, Nursing - Associate Degree, Nursing - Practical, and Physical Therapist Assistant.

Medical Assistant Program

The Medical Assistant (MA) program is designed to prepare men and women to function as members of the health care delivery team and perform administrative and clinical procedures. This most often occurs in ambulatory settings such as medical offices and clinics. The program is one year in length and includes an eight week externship in various clinical sites. The student may be required to travel a distance for the externship. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs on the recommendation from the Committee of Accreditation for Medical Assistant Education. More

Medical Laboratory Technician

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program prepares graduates to work under the supervision of the medical technologist, pathologist, or other qualified physician in a medical laboratory. A technician performs tests that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The two year program is offered jointly by NIACC and Hawkeye Community College. The first year can be completed at NIACC. A summer session and the fall semester of the second year are completed at Hawkeye. The final semester involves placement in a clinical lab setting. Upon completion of the program, the student is awarded an associate of applied science degree and is prepared to work in hospital laboratories, clinics, physicians’ offices, public health agencies, and research institutions. Associate Degree Nursing

The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program is designed to prepare men and women for general staff registered nursing positions which involve direct care of patients. There are two routes of entry into the program - one for beginning regular students and one for Licensed Practical Nurses. The program can be completed in five academic terms. Transfer students are assessed on an individual basis. The program is approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing. Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) (61 Brodway - 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006, 212-363-5555 ext 153).

The Practical Nursing (PN) program is designed to prepare individuals to work in nursing situations which are relatively stable and unchanging. The program also teaches students to assist experienced registered nurses and physicians in nursing situations that are complex and changing. The program is one year in length, beginning with a six week summer session. The program is approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing. More

Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA)

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program is two academic years in length (including one summer session), and is designed to prepare graduates for entry-level positions as Physical Therapist Assistants. The program consists of courses in behavioral and physical sciences, as well as requiring coursework in communication. PTA technical courses include both theory and supervised experience that are sequenced throughout the two years, thus providing adequate time for the student to practice the skills, knowledge, and attitudes learned in the coursework. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. More
