The 8th Annual Automotive Careers Night was held on February 21, 2000 at North Iowa Area Community College. Careers Night provides an opportunity for area students to meet with others who share their interest and to learn more about the NIACC Automotive Technology Program and the automotive service industry. Over one hundred gathered for the event, including high school students from thirteen area schools, high school instructors, parents, NIACC automotive advisory committee members, automotive program students, and NIACC personnel.
Participants enjoyed an evening meal in the Muse-Norris Conference Center and listened to speakers from education and industry : Mark Poppe, NIACC instructor at the Clear Lake Automotive Technology Center, Rob Heimbuch, NIACC automotive instructor on campus, and Lon Barkema, local businessman and a member of the advisory committee.
Specialty vehicles, displayed in the automotive laboratory, were also a part of the annual event. Students not only had the chance to check out the vehicles, but to talk with the vehicle owners. On display this year: Gary Price's Plymouth Prowler, Tom Hovland's Lamborghini, a Lincoln LS and a Ford Excursion, complements of Gary Lafrenz, Willie McCormick's FXR custom low rider motorcycle, Larry Weide's Street Rod coupe, Dave Buettner's Super/Gas Baretta drag car, and Greg Arrowood's Mach I Mustang. Also, on display for the evening from the Mason City 1133 Transportation Company of the Iowa National Guard, a "hummer", High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, manned by SFC Robert Scott. Paul Danzow, once again, allowed the use of his electronic "Christmas Tree" for those who wished to test their reaction-time skills.
Names were drawn from student registration cards for door prizes donated by Mac Tools, Snap-On Tools, and Winnebago Industries. NIACC Automotive Technology T-shirts were also given to the students in attendance.
