In these sessions, student's career plans, previous background, transcripts, test scores, life experiences, and motivation will aid in designing a positive educational experience.

Automotive Program Goal and Objectives:

Prepare individuals for employment in the automotive service industry by:

Instructors

Greg Arrowood, Rob Heimbuch, and Jack Rohde have ASE Automotive Technician Certification and automotive industry experience. Greg has been teaching at NIACC since 1988, Rob since 1999, and Jack since 2002.

Program Graduate Employment

Program graduate follow-up survey responses are compiled annually by the North Iowa Career Center and are included in the Career Placement Report. The automotive program graduates have traditionally reported an excellent employment percentage, and according to the 2004 Placement Report, 100% of the automotive graduates were employed.

ASE Master Certified Program

Upon the recommendation of the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF), a non-profit organization that evaluates automotive training programs according to national standards determined by the automotive industry and educational community, the Automotive Service Technology Program at North Iowa Area Community College has been awarded Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Certification.

Participation in the NATEF/ASE certification process is voluntary. Secondary and post-secondary training programs seeking ASE certification must have a minimum of four automotive occupational training areas evaluated by NATEF. The Master Certification awarded to the NIACC program verifies that all eight occupational areas examined and evaluated (Brakes, Electrical Systems, Engine Performance, Suspension & Steering, Automatic Transmission/transaxles, Engine Repair, Heating & Air Conditioning, and Manual Drive Train & Axles) meet national standards.

In a letter to NIACC President Dr. David Buettner, ASE President Ronald H. Weiner expressed his congratulations for the program's Master Certification. "Although many educational institutions strive for it, only a small percentage achieve this certification," he said. "Both the educational and automotive communities should be proud of your commitment to quality automobile training programs."

The Automotive Service Technology program at NIACC is a 4-1/2 semester Associate of Applied Science degree program, a continuation of the 2-1/2 semester diploma program delivered on the Mason City campus and also, in part, at the NIACC Automotive Tech Prep Academy located at the Clear Lake High School. In addition to certification of training programs, Automotive Service Excellence promotes automotive technician certification through a voluntary testing program. Instructors, Greg Arrowood, Rob Heimbuch, and Jack Rohde are ASE Certified Automotive Technicians.
