Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult Basic Education Classes are taught as individual classes held in independent locations as well as integrated into GED^® classes. Adult Basic Education provides reading, math, writing and English instruction for those who are functioning below a 9th grade level.

The fastest growing jobs in the 21st century will require some level of postsecondary education and obtaining basic education skills will be vital to obtaining employment. ABE classes offer the opportunity to meet those demands.

Adult Basic Education has four functioning levels: ABE Beginning Literacy, Beginning Basic, Intermediate Low, and Intermediate High. Instructors work with students at the student’s level of ability to improve the student’s educational, employability, and soft skills.

ABE Students

Have a desire to learn
Can set individual educational goals
Work at their own level and pace
Can improve their employment opportunities
Can learn how to become effective employees

ABE Instructors

Help students learn and/or improve their skills
Adjust material to each student’s ability level
Provide opportunities for personal goal setting
Allow class time for student questions
Develop and nurture student self-esteem

ABE Classes

Are friendly
Are usually small
Offer open enrollment where students may attend at any time
Offer an orientation session explaining class procedure, policies, rules and expectations
Are designed so students work independently, in pairs, small groups and large groups

ABE Curriculum

Is flexible
Ensures classes and materials are student-centered
Encourages oral communication about real life situations

ABE Fees

There is a class preparation fee of $25.00 per student per year
This fee may be waived due to financial hardship
