Course Description:
This grammar workbook focuses on several aspects of writing. Units 1
and 2 provide Students practice in constructing effective sentences and
recognizing various parts of Speech. Unit 3 on paragraph developing
presents important aspects of good Paragraphs: topic sentence, support,
and conclusion. Units 4,5, and 6 deal with Capitalization, punctuation,
and writing conventions. The Short Stories handout includes 8 short
stories grouped in emphasis under characters/conflicts, setting/props,
plot/foreshadowing, and irony. The "Modern Fiction" handout explains the
literary elements of action, character, point of view, setting, and style.
An additional five pages are included where
the student applies this knowledge to examples.
Objective:
The student will complete all six units of the grammar
book including the Practice Apply, and Check Up sections, take a test over each
unit, and the final posttest. In the Short Stories text, the student will
review the short story information in the "Modern
Fiction" handout, and pass a brief quiz. He/she will then read eight short
stories, two from each section of the Short Stories handout, plus complete
the worksheet questions for each of the stories. Sixty percent accuracy
is required to pass. Retests are required on units failed. The score from failed
test will be averaged with retest score. Short story scores will be determined
by the completeness of the answers to the questions pertaining to each of the
stories. If necessary, additional work will be required until the 60% level
is reached.

Course Description:
The Language Builder Advanced workbook builds on the concepts introduced in
the Language Builder Intermediate workbook The workbook deals with usage,
sentence formation, paragraph development, capitalization, punctuation, and
writing conventions. The Writing Essays unit presents the organization and
development of an effective essay. The poetry paperback includes100 poetry
selections by such authors as Frost, Giovanni, Lawrence, Shakespeare, Ginsberg, Besho, and Millay, grouped in seven thematic categories.
Objective:
Students will complete all six units of the grammar
book including the Practice, Apply, and Check Up sections,
unit tests, and the final posttest. In the Poetry text, the students will choose
one poem from each of the seven units, completing the questions, "A Closer
Look," after each poem. Sixty percent accuracy is required to pass.

novel, poetry, and drama units. Sixty percent accuracy is required on each
written assignment to pass. If necessary, additional work will be required
until the 60% level is reached. Sixty percent is required on quizzes to
pass. Retests are required on quizzes failed. The score from failed quiz
will be averaged with retest score.
