ELECTRONIC DATABASES

NIACC Library has purchased a subscription to the following databases. On campus access is usually by IP Address.  If you are not on campus, you need to use your NIACC username and password to access these databases. For information on your NIACC login account, go to: http://www.niacc.edu/online/logon.pdf

NOTICE: Due to license restrictions, use of these databases is restricted to NIACC students, faculty, and staff, and those others taking or teaching classes on the NIACC campus.

General Online Databases

EBSCOhost Databases  - A collection of databases containing abstracts and indexing to magazine, journal, and newspaper articles, as well as full text access to many articles.  General databases, as well as specialized databases for business, health, and education, as well as ones designed for K-12 users and teachers,  are included.

EBSCOhost Academic Search Premier - A comprehensive database containing abstracts and indexing to over 4,700 journals, with full text of over 3,600.  Images collection and company profiles are also available.   TopicSearch contains full text for over 60,000 articles from 399 diverse sources including international and regional newspapers, EBSCO's unparalleled collection of periodicals, biographies, public opinion polls, book reviews, pamphlets, and government information.

 

Credo Reference Credo Reference is an online reference service made up of full-text books from the world's best publishers. Whether you're working on a research paper, trying to win trivia or just curious, Credo Reference has something for you.  The database also has topic pages on lots of subjects to help you get started on your research.     

 

Des Moines Register (ProQuest Newspapers) - Contains full-text articles from the Des Moines Register, 1999 to date.

 

Newspaper Source Plus (EBSCO) - Newspaper Source Plus includes more than 860 full-text newspapers, providing more than 35 million full-text articles. In addition, the database features more than 857,000 television and radio news transcripts.     McClatchy-Tribune Collection  includes a 90-day archive of approximately 290 newspapers from the McClatchy-Tribune Information Services.  Regional Business News  provides comprehensive full text coverage for more than 80 regional business publications.

 

Additional full text EBSCOhost databases include Primary Search® for elementary school libraries, and MasterFile Premier™ for public libraries.

Specialized Online Databases

AccessScience  -  AccessScience provides the finest collection of science reference materials—online and fully searchable - access to all the articles, fully illustrated, from the latest edition of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology, Research Updates from the McGraw-Hill Yearbooks, thousands of illustrations, and the latest Science News® headlines, biographies, and more. 

Auto Repair Reference Center - Auto Repair Reference Center contains information on most major manufacturers of domestic and imported vehicles, with repair information for most vintage makes starting as far back as 1945. Database content includes approximately 28,350 vehicles covered from 1945 to present.

Business Source Elite (EBSCO) - Provides full text coverage of scholarly business, management, and economics journals, as well as company profiles.  Corporate ResourceNet  is designed to meet the diverse information needs of today’s companies and contains full text articles from nearly 1,200 quality magazines and journals.

 

Career Guidance Center - A career research database containing a career encyclopedia, in-depth job descriptions, current job-specific resource listings, career industry descriptions, video clips and other useful career information.  A free link to Career Opportunities News is also included.

 

 

ERIC (EBSCO) - Educational Resources Information Center - A database created to assist teachers and other educators in gaining access to information from journals in the  Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index.  Includes full text of ERIC digests, with citations and abstracts for educational journals.  Links to some full-text articles are provided.   Note: This searches Journals only, unless you remove the limiters when searching. 

 

Issues and Controversies - Full-text database with up-to-date, in-depth and objective information on the most prominent and hotly debated issues of the day.  Backfiles cover more than 250 controversial topics in the news since 1995.  Issues and Controversies in American History  gives balanced reports on the background, outcomes, and contemporary points of view for major topics in American history.

 

LearningExpressLibrary - This database contains interactive test preparation and practice (ACT, GED, SAT, Nursing & Teaching, ASVAB; skill-building exercises and self-paced study tools for reading, writing, math, & career skills.  Note: You will need to set up your own login account when you start.   

 

LexisNexis Academic - A full-text database of nearly 5,000 publications, giving access to news, financial, medical, and legal information.  Included are newspapers, magazines, wire services, federal and state court opinions, federal and state statutes, federal regulations, and SEC filings such as 10-K’s, 10-Q’s, and their exhibits.     

 

Nursing & Health Databases - The CINAHL® Database contains records from 1982 to the present with abstracts to articles published in English-language nursing and allied health journals, as well as virtually all publications of the American Nurses' Association and the National League for Nursing.  HealthSource® Nursing/ Academic Edition (EBSCO) provides full text articles from many scholarly nursing and allied health journals, as well as pamphlets, reference books, drug information, and a medical encyclopedia. Thomson MICROMEDEX provides access to the following: MICROMEDEX Healthcare Series, a wide range of clinical databases, including unbiased, referenced information about drugs, toxicology, diseases, acute care, and alternative medicine; CareNotes™ System, which provides your patients with complete, easy-to-understand information about all aspects of their care, medications, and health, in English or Spanish. 

 

PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's free search service that provides access to over 11 million citations in MEDLINE and other related databases, with links to participating online journals.  MEDLINEplus is a goldmine of good health information from the world's largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine., and contains authoritative and up-to-date information for both health professionals and consumers.  It includes information on over 500 diseases and conditions, lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and dictionaries, health information in Spanish, extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, and links to thousands of clinical trials.   HealthSource® Consumer Edition is a rich collection of consumer health information from many full text health periodicals, pamphlet, and reference books. 

 

Opposing Viewpoints in Context - This database covers the pros and cons of everything from ongoing controversies to today's hot topics.   It includes the Opposing Viewpoints series, selections from Reference USA sources and Information Plus Reference series, newspaper and magazine coverage, and links to statistics and to related Web sites.

 

PsycARTICLES - This database contains searchable full text articles on current issues in psychology and covers general psychology and specialized, basic, applied, clinical and theoretical research in psychology. It contains more than 39,000 searchable full text articles from 45 journals published by the American Psychological Association and 8 from allied organizations.  Coverage spans from 1985 to the present.

 

Small Business Reference Center (EBSCO) - This database provides information on starting, growing, and managing a business.  It includes  articles from nearly 400 full-text periodicals and over 450 full-text reference books, as well as videos and state-specific resources.

 

Vocational and Career Collection (EBSCO) - This database is designed for vocational and technical libraries servicing high schools, community colleges, trade institutions and the general public.  It  provides full text coverage for nearly 400 trade and industry-related periodicals.

FirstSearch Databases

OCLC FirstSearch provides access to a variety of subscription and pay-per-search databases that can be searched to find books, articles, films, computer software, Internet resources, and other materials. Databases accessible from NIACC Library on FirstSearch are listed below.  NOTICE: Due to license restrictions, use of these databases is restricted to NIACC students, faculty, and staff, and those others taking or teaching classes on the NIACC campus. 

 

ArchiveGrid - Online access to descriptions of archival collections owned by libraries, museums, historical societies, and archives worldwide.  Includes historical documents, personal papers and family histories held in archives. 

 

Article1st - Citations of articles listed on the table of contents pages of nearly 12,600 journals. 

 

CAMIO - Catalog of Art Museum Images Online - A collection of art images from around the world contributed and described by leading museums, all rights-cleared for educational use.

 

Clase and Periodica - CLASE indexes documents published in Latin American journals specializing in the social sciences and humanities. PERIODICA covers journals specializing in science and technology. Offers access to more than 300,000 bibliographic citations from documents published in 2,600 scholarly journals published in the Spanish, Portuguese, French and English languages.

 

ECO - Electronic Collections Online - Citations to articles from more than 1300 full-text electronic journals. 

 

ERIC - Educational Resources Information Center - A database created to assist teachers and other educators in gaining access to information from journals and documents in the  Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education.  Includes full text of ERIC digests, with citations and abstracts for educational journals.  

 

MEDLINE - Abstracts of articles from medical journals.

 

OAIster - A union catalog of digital resources from over 1,000 organizations, including digitized books and articles, audio files, images, movies, and statistics files.  

 

OCLC Electronic Books - OCLC catalog of online electronic books available through libraries worldwide.

 

PapersFirst - An index of individual papers presented at conferences. 

 

ProceedingsFirst - Tables of contents of papers presented at conferences worldwide.  

 

World Almanac - Full text of the World Almanac.

 

WorldCat - Books and other materials in libraries worldwide.   

 

WorldCat Dissertations - All dissertations, theses and published material based on theses cataloged by OCLC members, including all subjects.

Electronic Books

EBSCOhost ebook Collection - NIACC's eBook collection includes over 13,000 copyrighted titles and approximately 4,000 public domain titles.  Users may view eBooks online or download them to a portable device by setting up a My EBSCOhost account.

 

Marshall Cavendish Digital Titles  - NIACC's eBook collection includes several reference titles published by the Marshall Cavendish company.

 

ABC-Clio Ebook Collection - A number of books on contemporary topics are available in NIACC's eBook collection.

 

On-Line Books Page - Links to 12,000 titles worldwide, mostly in HTML format.

 

Project Gutenberg - Online e-texts of major literary classics in the public domain.

Encyclopedias

Encarta - Free online version of the encyclopedia.  A dictionary and atlas are also included.

 

 

Encyclopedia Americana - Full-text online version of the encyclopedia, with links to related Web sites.  

 

Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia (EBSCO) - Full-text online encyclopedia covering a variety of subjects.

 

International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (Gale Virtual Reference Library) - This 8-volume electronic reference set covers all aspects of the social sciences.

Dictionaries 

American Heritage Dictionary - Searchable online version of the fourth edition; contains many full-page illustrations.   

 

Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary - Free version.

 

Roget's Thesaurus - Several online versions available.

 

Electronic Reference Databases

 

Gale Virtual Reference Library - This database offers you an online collection of premier reference eBooks. You can search a single eBook or across an entire eBook collection.

Government Resources on the Internet (NIACC List) - A list of links to government information and resources.

 

GPO - U.S. Government publications.

 

GPO's Federal Digital System - Access to many federal government online databases.

 

American FactFinder - U.S. Census Bureau's web site for population, housing, geographic, and economic data.

 

GovEngine.com - Comprehensive directory of Official Federal, State, and Local Government and Court links.

 

USA.gov - Online government information, services, and resources.

 

 

National Science Digital Library - NSDL is the Nation's FREE online library for education and research in
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Public Agenda Electronic Discussion Guides - In depth analysis and opinion studies done by Public Agenda, a nonpartisan, nonprofit public opinion research and citizen education organization based in New York City. 

iTools - Easy clear access to a wide variety of electronic basic reference tools

Electronic Journals

New Directions for Student Services - Online version, beginning with vol. 97 (2002).  At the login screen, click on the Journal Finder link in the login box (not the button at the top of the screen).  You do not need to register or enter a username/password.  Choose Education, then New Directions for Student Services.  You can browse the contents for the 2002 issues and get the PDF full text of an article.
