Extreme Makeover: College Edition image

Londa's Journal
May 3, 2007
I can not describe the overwhelming feeling that I had Tuesday night when I finished all of my requirements for the semester.  When I started full-time college last August, it was a lot on top of my responsibilities with my family and my job.  I know I have said it often, but over time the routine seemed easier.  I am 2 classes away from having my associates degree, and I am excited to keep working toward my bachelor degree.  I would recommend the experience to any adult wondering if they can handle it.  I would never tell anyone that it's easy, only that it is totally worth it in the end.  I'm an optimist, but I believe we can be who we want to be no matter what age we decide to find it.  Thanks NIACC for a wonderful year!!

To be honest, when the weather was so nice last week I didn't want to be inside doing homework. I just wanted to play ball in the yard with my family. I was relieved to see all the rain the last few days, it brought me back to reality. Classes are all going well, although I am counting down the weeks til summer. The school year has been so busy and challenging, it's hard to believe I am down to my last 5 weeks. I have had so many accomplishments at work and school to be thankful for this year, I haven't forgotten that for a minute. I have no doubt that all the studying and hard work will pay off!!  - Londa

Spring break is quickly approaching, while the weather continues to feel like winter.  This semester has been a smoother transition for me.  The classes aren't any easier than last semester, but I just feel used to the routine.  I am taking one class on campus, and the rest are online.  I can tell that both have their advantages.  I enjoy going to class and being able to ask questions and have other students to talk to.  The 45 minute drive once a week isn't bad, but I am thankful that with my online classes I only drive it once.  My kids are involved in activities, and I don't want to miss anything with them.  The key for me is to have a planner and stay organized.  Don't let deadlines sneak up.  There is nobody in my home reminding me of my assignment deadlines and exams.  It is my job to stay on top of it.  I am just thankful that I took the plunge and went back to school.  I have had more opportunity already, and I feel that I am on my way to achieving my goals.  It's not easy, but totally worth it.  Thanks NIACC!!

Since my last update, I have settled into more of a routine.  I can honestly say that I enjoy the classes I'm taking, but I still struggle with my busy schedule.  Taking classes online is something I would recommend to any adult with a job and a family.  I just need to stay on top of my deadlines, and give myself enough time every week for studies.  It's interesting to go to school the same time as your kids.  My fourth grader has quite a bit of homework during the week.  We talk about our test scores, and which classes we like the best.  I guess we'll have that in common for a few more years.  Life is short, and just because some of us don't finish college when we are younger doesn't mean that we have to close the door to more opportunity.  I feel this way more now than I did even in August.  This semester has gone so fast.  I think my kids have grown 6 inches while I wasn't looking.  Thanksgiving will be here next week, and I have many blessings to be thankful for this year!

I would be lying if I said that the last 3 weeks have been easy.  This has been quite a challenge.  I think my family does have the routine down, and my husband has been a huge help picking up the slack for me.  The first week was a shock to my system with lots of reading, homework, and test taking.  Now that I've had a few more weeks to get used to it, things are going much better.  Classes haven't gotten any easier, but I'm better at budgeting my time and I do enjoy them.  My son assured me, as he was fishing for clean clothes on my bed one morning, that he thought I was still a good mom.  That was a relief!!

The summer has gone by fast, and I still feel so blessed to have this opportunity through NIACC.  I am excited to get started in a few weeks, I am taking some interesting courses.  I am ready to be a month into classes, because I am a little nervous about getting the family used to a routine that includes Mom's homework schedule.  Because of my kid's activities, I am fortunate that I am doing my classes on-line. Within a matter of weeks, we'll all be used to the changes.  What an adventure!
