North Iowa Area Community College will host the Region XI Men’s golf tournament Sunday (May 3) and Monday (May 4) at the Mason City Country Club.

The tournament provides a great opportunity for North Iowa to come and see the best men’s golfers at the Junior College level.

“I’m very excited to host this event and showcase what North Iowa has to offer those people who are coming from all over the state,”, Chris Frenz, NIACC head golf coach, said.  “The Country Club, club pro Matt Messenger, his employees and the members of the course have been tremendous in supporting not only the tournament, but the men’s and women’s teams and NIACC.”

This year, a special regional tournament banquet will be held on Sunday night at which Shad Muth will serve as the guest speaker.  Muth, a former Clear Lake graduate, played college golf at Indian Hills Community College and University of Texas-Arlington.  He is currently trying to make it on the pro circuit in Texas.

“He has a great story for these players to hear, and I think it will make them think about what possibilities are out there for them.  Shad has been very successful, and I look forward to hearing his message,” Frenz said.

The banquet will be held Sunday night at 6p.m.  The tournament tees off Sunday at 1 p.m. and Monday at 9 a.m.  The winning team and the top five individuals not on that team will play in the NJCAA National Championship in Scottsboro, Alabama, May 19-22.  Teams competing in the Region XI tournament include NIACC, Kirkwood Community College, Iowa Lakes Community College, Southeastern Community College, Scott Community College, Ellsworth Community College, DMACC, Marshalltown Community College and Iowa Central Community College.  Kirkwood Community College is the defending regional champion.
