North Iowa Area Community College’s volleyball team will honor October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month during their home match vs. Waldorf College JV on Wednesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. The “Dig Pink” themed match, with hopes to pack the stands with pink-clad fans, will raise money for breast cancer education and research. Cancer survivors will be admitted to the match for free.
“We are so excited to continue this event. This is our second year as a Dig Pink participant, and the response has been outstanding,” Mary Jo Vrba, NIACC head volleyball coach, said. All of the money raised goes to the Side-out Foundation for Breast Cancer education and research.
One way the team is raising funds is through the sale of “Think Pink” t-shirts. T-shirts are now available for purchase and will be available at all home games until the night of the event.
The team’s fundraising efforts also include the “Kiss a Pig” contest. One vote for every dollar donated, or ten votes for every t-shirt purchased, will allow fans to vote for who they want to see kiss the pig. The “lucky” winner will kiss the pig the night of the match. Candidates for “Kiss a Pig” include: Chris Brandt, math instructor/assistant volleyball coach; Dr. Deb Derr, NIACC president; Jason Friday, biology instructor; Steve Kelley, admissions/head wrestling coach; Kevin Losee, tool and die instructor; Dan Mason, athletic director; and Mark Vrba, head athletic trainer.
‘Cheesecake for Charity’ will also be available the night of the event. Brandt will donate her famous cheesecakes for sale during the event, with all proceeds also going to the Side-out Foundation for breast cancer education and research. There will be a limited number of slices available, so get there early.
For more information about the match, to purchase a t-shirt or to make a donation, please contact Mary Jo Vrba at 641-422-4179 or vrbamary@niacc.edu.
