The North Iowa Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. John Klemas, will present a Spring Concert on Tuesday, April 1 at 7:30 PM in the North Iowa Community Auditorium on the campus of North Iowa Area Community College.
As a very special feature of this Spring Concert there will also be a performance by the Iowa State University Wind Ensemble under the direction of their conductor, Dr. Michael Golemo.
The ISU Wind Ensemble features sixty of the finest student wind and percussion players on the Iowa State campus. Its repertory includes challenging music from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, from smaller chamber groups to the full ensemble. The Wind Ensemble regularly commissions new works and often features renowned guest conductors and soloists, including Simon Estes, Timothy Reynish, Lt. Col. Alan Bonner, and Leigh Howard Stevens. The have performed for the College Band Directors National Association North Division convention and numerous times for the Iowa Bandmasters Association convention. Under the direction of Michael Golemo, the Wind Ensemble has performed in Minneapolis' Orchestra Hall, Chicago's Orchestra Hall, and Omaha's Holland Center for the Performing Arts. The Wind Ensemble has toured Europe three times (2003, 2005, 2007), with performances in Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Brussels and Stüttgart. The group recently received an invitation from the Russian Ministry of Culture and Cinematography to perform in St. Petersburg in March 2009.
Michael Golemo is the director of bands and chair of the department of music at Iowa State University. A native of Chicago, he received his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degrees from Northwestern University where he studied conducting with John Paynter and saxophone with Frederick Hemke. He completed his doctorate in wind conducting at Michigan State University under Kenneth Bloomquist and John Whitwell. He previously served as assistant director of Bands at The University of Akron (OH), and prior to that as director of bands at Albion College (MI). Earlier this month, Dr. Golemo was inducted into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association.
Members of the North Iowa Concert Band represent communities from all over North Iowa including the towns of Britt, Charles City, Clear Lake, Fairbank, Floyd, Forest City, Garner, Greene, Hampton, Kanawha, Lake Mills, Manly, Marble Rock, Mason City, McIntire, New Hampton, Nora Springs, Osage, Riceville, Rockford, Rockwell, St. Ansgar, Stacyville, Sumner and Owatonna, MN.
Tickets for the performance are $3 for adults and can be obtained at the NIACC Business Office (641) 422-4188. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the concert. All students will receive free admission. There will be a reception in the Muse-Norris Conference Center following the concert.
