The 2008-2009 Travel and Adventure Series will continue this month at North Iowa Area Community College. “The Other Side of Mexico,” a film by Fran Reidelberger, takes this season’s series to the central highland of Mexico.
NIACC and the Mason City Noon Kiwanis sponsor the Travel and Adventure Series. There will be a 15-minute intermission at which time door prizes will be given away. The film will be presented at 2 p.m., on Sunday, March 22, in the North Iowa Community Auditorium.
The central highlands of Mexico are known to locals- and a few savvy travelers- as the “Land of Eternal Spring.” In this all new digital production, filmmakers, Fran and Brooke Reidelberger explore this special part of our southern neighbor far from the daily headlines. Traveling from Mexico City to Colima, you will see: Ancient Aztec ruins, colonial silver towns, modern retirement meccas for adventurous gringos, colorful market older American, the real Tequila, religious festivals, Purepucha Indians and their “Dance of the Little Old Men,” 15th generation craftsman, rodeos, strolling troubadours, Mexico’s highest and largest lake, a humble man’s version of the Sistine Chapel active volcanoes and dancing dogs, and butterfly heaven at 11,000 feet. All of this, plus the incredible people, are part of “The Other Side of Mexico.”
Fran Reidelberger has been chasing mountains to see what’s on the other side since his childhood days in Nashville, Illinois.
The U.S. Navy gave him an opportunity to continue his journey-from coast to coast of the United States and throughout the Far East with stops in Hong Kong, Japan, Okinawa and the Philippines.
Fran was also stationed at Pearl Harbor for two years, and it was there that he began a 14 career in daily newspaper work. He started as a club reporter for the Honolulu Star Bulletin and ended as editor of the Decatur, Illinois Herald and Review. He won a number of awards for writing, editing, newspaper design and creative use of news photos.
Admission to “The Other Side of Mexico” is at the door $5 for adults and $3 for students. Tickets can be purchased at NIACC or from any Mason City Noon Kiwanis member. All proceeds go towards area youth programs. For additional information, call NIACC Continuing Education at 641 422-4258.
