Travel and Adventure Series Explores Etched in Stone: Scotland to Provence
Feb 18, 2010

Ref. 3143

The 2009-2010 Travel and Adventure Series will continue this month at North Iowa Area Community College. “Etched in Stone: Scotland to Provence,” a film by Monty and Marsha Brown, takes this season’s series on a journey from the Scotland coast along the Irish Sea down to the romantic Provence on the Mediterranean Sea.

Monty and Marsha Brown have captured an historical, spiritual journey that explores the stories and legends of the churches, castles, monuments, monoliths and remnants found along the coast from Scotland to Provence.  The sojourn moves from Solway Firth on the Irish Sea to Provence on the Mediterranean shore.  Everywhere the history of a glorious past is written in the stone of churches, castles, and monuments.

The journey begins in Northumberland where you will visit Sweetheart Abbey, Bamburgh Castle and the Fame islands of the North Sea.  Continue along the coast as you visit Yorkshire and Glastonbury Abbey in England where you will experience the magnificent cathedrals, sacred lands and peaceful byways located throughout England.

From England, the journey crosses the Chanel to Northern France for an exploration of monasteries, cathedrals and country churches.  View American tombs at Port de Plaisance, plinths and obelisks; and the cathedrals of St. Tugdual at Treguier and Coutances.  As Mary Magdalene also landed, the journey will conclude on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea at Provence.

NIACC and the Mason City Noon Kiwanis sponsor the Travel and Adventure Series. There will be a 15-minute intermission at which time door prizes will be given away. The film will be presented at 2 p.m., on Sunday, February 21, in the North Iowa Community Auditorium.

Admission to “Etched in Stone: Scotland to Provence” is $5 for adults and $3 for students.  Tickets can be purchased at NIACC or from any Mason City Noon Kiwanis member or at the door. A portion of the proceeds will go toward area youth programs. For additional information, call NIACC Continuing Education at 641-422-4258.
