Business and community leaders from Charles City have joined with North Iowa Area Community College to raise funds for an initiative which will bring more learning opportunities in the areas of science and technology, engineering and math (STEM) to local high school students. The NIACC Charles City Science and Technology Academy will offer college courses to academically prepared students. The Academy will benefit students by enhancing their college preparation and future career opportunities.

“Through a collaborative effort between NIACC and Charles City Schools, we were excited to develop the idea for a STEM Academy in our region with the growing biotechnology industry,” Dr. Deb Derr, NIACC president, said.  “And, due to the commitment of such loyal supporters of NIACC in the community, we’re going to be able to make that happen.”

Andy Pattee, Charles City superintendent of schools, has been involved in ongoing conversations with NIACC. Pattee believes this optimization will produce students with the skills 21st century employers demand. The superintendent also sees great potential to increase student engagement by showing connections to local industry through onsite learning and possibly even internships as the program develops.

Four community advocates, Denise Kuhn, NIACC foundation board member, Toni Noah, NIACC board member, Cathy Rottinghaus, NIACC foundation board member and First Citizens National Bank community president, and Bob Thomson, local businessman and entrepreneur, will coordinate the event in June. Andy Pattee, Superintendent of Charles City Schools, and Margie Jensen serve on the steering committee for this event as well.

The fundraiser will be hosted by Bob Thomson and Margie Jensen at the Thomson home, 401 Spriggs Street, from 5 to 7 p.m. on June 24. The entire community is invited to purchase tickets and attend. All monies raised support The NIACC Charles City Science and Technology Academy. Guests will enjoy appetizers, beverages and the company of others who share a commitment to high educational standards and the future of Charles City.

Tickets are available for a suggested donation of $25. Please contact the NIACC Foundation office to purchase a ticket or make a donation. Checks should be written to the NIACC Foundation and will be tax deductible. The NIACC Foundation office is located on the Mason City campus at 500 College Drive, Mason City, 50401. Tickets may also be purchased by calling the Foundation at 641-422-4386 or 1-888-GO-NIACC.
