| Matt Hauge, IDEA Student Scholarship Award Winner and NIACC Student |
Matt Hauge, a North Iowa Area Community College student from Forest City, received the Iowa Developmental Education Association (IDEA) student scholarship award at the IDEA conference this fall. The award supports students of developmental education programs as they continue their college degree aspirations.
“Matt is a highly motivated student and understands the importance of being successful in his developmental courses,” Chris Brandt, NIACC developmental math instructor, said.
Criteria for the IDEA student scholarship award include completion of at least two developmental courses or participation in at least two developmental programs such as math, writing, reading, ESL or study skills; a 3.0 grade point average (based on a 4.0 scale); and plans to enroll in or continue enrollment in a postsecondary educational institution during the next academic year.
In his essay, which was required for the award, Hauge wrote, “After getting into the coursework with a whole new attitude of wanting to learn so I could move on to the regular courses, I found it was easier than ever…Just the mere fact that developmental education is offered at NIACC, as well as other community colleges, is a reason to be thankful. It gives people like me the opportunity to get back up to par with fundamental course work.”
