North Iowa Area Community College will offer a program on “A More Perfect Constitution” on Friday, September 17, in Beem Forum, room 200 on the NIACC campus from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This free public forum will be facilitated by John Schmaltz, NIACC emeritus instructor in political science, and will commemorate Constitution Day which is held on September 17 of each year.
This year’s program will examine Professor Larry Sabato’s book, A More Perfect Constitution, in which he is proposing 23 amendments to the present constitution. Sabato, the founder of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, offers many interesting and controversial changes to the U. S. Constitution, including a single six-year presidential term, limiting federal justices to 15-year terms and placing former presidents and vice presidents in the U. S. Senate. Professor Sabato wants to implement these changes through a Constitutional Convention which can be called under our present constitution. Questions and discussion will also be a part of this program.
NIACC’s presentation of this forum complies with the federal law requiring every school that receives federal funds to provide students with a program on the U. S. Constitution. This forum will be the sixth offered to NIACC students and the public. Free copies of the Constitution will also be given out to all who attend the program. The Constitution Forum is offered to the public as well through NIACC’s Lifelong Learning Institute.
