During the annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science (IAS) at Des Moines University this spring, Carol Schutte, North Iowa Area Community College Biological Science instructor, was elected to a three year term for the IAS Board of Directors.

“I’ve enjoyed membership in the Iowa Academy of Science for over 20 years.  This organization is a vital network for Iowa scientists and a great resource for Iowa’s citizens.  We are eager to gain more visibility and to help the public better understand the dynamic, exciting world of science.  So many of the changes we are facing in our world require a basic understanding of science; everything from conservation issues to nanotechnology to cancer research – issues that touch everyone’s lives. The Academy wants to help Iowa’s citizenry cope with these challenges by providing dependable science information.  I am excited and honored to serve on the Board of Directors,” Schutte said.

Organized in 1876, the IAS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established to promote scientific research, science education, public understanding of science and recognition of excellence in these endeavors.  IAS membership is made up of 750 researchers and educators from all areas of science and all academic levels, from secondary education students to doctors.

The Academy holds annual meetings drawing more than 250 participants and involving more than 100 scientific presentations each year. The Academy publishes the Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science, a peer reviewed and indexed journal and also manages the Iowa Science Foundation, which provides $40,000 in research funds each year.

The newest IAS program is the National Wildlife Refuge Audio Series podcast tours.  Before visiting one of Iowa’s refuges, visitors can go to http://www.scienceiniowa.org/nwr/ for background information and a guide to one of the seven federally protected natural areas in Iowa.
