NIACC Practical Nursing Students Hold Pinning Ceremony

Students from North Iowa Area Community College’s Practical Nursing (PN) program recently participated in a pinning ceremony. The tradition of presenting a pin to nursing graduates began in 1880. The first ceremony held in the United States was at Nightingale School of Nursing. Nurses often wear pins on their uniform with pride as a symbol of their education.

Students graduating from NIACC’s PN program and taking part in the pinning ceremony were: Kelley Bauer of Sheffield; Phyllis Brandau and Lindy Malmin of Osage; Stephanie Bridges of Garner; Lindsay Brown, Heather Curley, Janet Luchtenburg, Darcy Madden, Melissa Rosonke, Monica Severson, and Erin Turner of Mason City; Shelly Diemer of Fredericksburg; Heather Hippen, Karen Roethler, and Tina Slinger of Charles City; Lisa Jensen of Northwood; Caroline Kaess of Thompson; Aprile Lang and Kevin Siems of Hampton; Gina Roth of Latimer; Rachel Sheriff of Dougherty; Dawn Wallace of Riceville; Kristi Wilkins of Nora Springs and Denise Younke of Cedar Rapids.

This student-sponsored event is held when students have successfully fulfilled the program’s requirements. The practical nursing program is one year in length, beginning with a six week summer session. The student completes the final rotation one-on-one with a licensed practical nurse serving as a preceptor in a nursing facility. The program is approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing. Students will take their licensure exam later this summer and successful completion results in licensed practical nurse status.
