Henkel Construction and NIACC Performing Arts Series Proudly Present Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story

Put on your poodle skirt and roll up your jeans because Buddy Holly is alive and well and will raise the roof at the North Iowa Community Auditorium in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story. The show takes the stage on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. as part of the 2001-2002 North Iowa Area Community College Performing Arts Series. Tickets are on sale now and cost $30 in advance and $35 at the door.

More than 40 years after "the day the music died," the life and times of the legendary rocker Holly come to life in a thrilling musical celebrating the singers brief but spectacular career. The Wednesday performance will lead into the 26th Annual Winter Dance Party held at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake.

The musical recreates Holly’s story from his days singing country music in Lubbock, Texas to his debut with The Crickets and ends with an amazing recreation of his last concert with Richie Valens, The Big Bopper and Dion at the Surf Ballroom on Feb. 2, 1959.

Born in 1936, Holly began music lessons in piano and violin at the age of eight and had his first recording contract in 1956. Holly’s band, The Crickets, was formed in 1957 with Nicki Sullivan, Joe B. Maudlin and Jerry Allison. Following his death in 1959, Holly’s fans still cherished his music. In 1971, twelve years after Holly’s death, Don McLean paid tribute to him in the song "American Pie." Holly was honored again in 1986 as he was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. The U.S. Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp of Holly in a 1993 series. Fans and artists continue to pay tribute to the many contributions Holly made through his music.

Holly’s original sound and talent is highlighted throughout the Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story through live renditions of his greatest hits including "Peggy Sue," "Oh Boy," "That’ll Be The Day," "Rave On" and "Words of Love" among others. Rock legends Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper are also featured in the show with their hits "La Bamba" and "Chantilly Lace."
