August 19, 2003 Latest NIACC Partnership Provides Students an Alternative Way to Earn a Bachelor’s Degree Adults interested in continuing their education
beyond an associate degree can now look to North Iowa Area Community
College for more options. Many times, adults who have already
attained some college credits find that the pressures of work and family
responsibilities make it difficult to continue their education to the
bachelor’s degree level. However, NIACC has a way to help. The College has entered into an agreement with the Columbus, Ohio-based Franklin University to offer students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree by combining on-campus courses at North Iowa Area Community College with online courses through Franklin University. First students earn their associate degree or equivalent coursework from NIACC. Then they complete “bridge” courses at their community college while simultaneously taking online classes through Franklin University to complete their bachelor’s degree. Through this online bachelor’s degree completion program, students will travel less by staying in their hometown and completing classes online. By combining resources, the two educational institutions can offer first-class instruction to students seeking a degree in high-demand fields. Ten majors are available: Accounting, Applied Management, Business Administration, Computer Science, Digital Communication, Health Care Management, Information Technology, Management, Management Information Sciences and Public Safety Management. Franklin University also offers an online MBA program and M.S. in Computer Science. Interested students are invited to meet with Franklin University Regional Directors Bob Morris and Kathy Heinlein in the NIACC Activity Center on Tuesday, August 26, from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. You may also contact Franklin University at 1-888-341-6237, by email at alliance@franklin.edu or visit Franklin’s website at www.alliance.franklin.edu. Franklin University serves more than 8,000 students annually through its on-campus programs in Columbus, Ohio and the Community College Alliance. More than 195 community colleges in 30 states have teamed with the university to serve students. In addition to offering 16 undergraduate degree programs, the 100-year-old university now has three master’s degree programs, including an MBA and M.S. in Computer Science, both offered in an online format. In 1999, Franklin was named as one of 15 educations organizations nationwide for a U.S. Department of Education pilot project, which ensures that federal financial aid is available to students pursuing college degrees through distance learning. To
ensure a smooth transfer process and plentiful options for NIACC students,
North Iowa Area Community College has numerous articulation agreements
with four-year public and private institutions, including Buena Vista
University on the NIACC campus. ##### Ref. FRANKLIN |
