NIACC News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ref. 2452

February 14, 2005

100 Percent of NIACC ADN and 96 Percent of NIACC PN Students Pass Licensure Exam

North Iowa Area Community College now has an additional reason to be proud of the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) and the Practical Nursing (PN) programs.

One hundred percent of the 26 eligible ADN graduates of the class of 2004 passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). NIACC’s program is the only program of 29 programs in the State to achieve a 100 percent pass rate, including the Baccalaureate programs.

Results from NIACC students in the Practical Nursing program currently reflect a 96 percent passing rate for the 28 eligible graduates of the class of 2004.

The NCLEX is a computerized adaptive test administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The responses to questions determine the level of complexity of each subsequent question, influencing the overall length of the exam.

"Several factors contribute to these successful outcomes," according to Donna Orton, chair of the health division. "Qualified and committed faculty, motivated students and access to excellent clinical facilities that provide exposure to quality clinicians, challenging clinical opportunities and state of the art technology. Our faculty and partnerships are core essentials in providing quality education for nursing students enrolled in our programs."

In spring of 2004, the ADN program was granted continued reaccreditation status by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) for the full eight-year period. Both the ADN and PN programs are fully approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing.

The Iowa Board of Nursing requires nursing education programs to achieve passing rates within 95 percent of the national average. NIACC has consistently met these standards over the past several years.
