John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center Hosts Youth Entrepreneurial Academy

The North Iowa Area Community College John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center will conduct the Youth Entrepreneurial Academy on June 19-23. Eighteen high school students from eleven various North Iowa school districts will participate.

The John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center extended invitations to all North Iowa juniors and seniors via area high school guidance counselors earlier this year. Applicants were asked to complete an application packet including recommendations by teachers, counselors and parents followed by an interview with John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center staff.

Area participants include:

Clear Lake – Dana Dzick

Forest City Christian – Philip Biermann and Stephen Biermann

Garner-Hayfield – Kevin Juhl and Raquel Schoneman

Hampton-Dumont – Benjamin Hansen

Lake Mills – Jessica Peterson and Cassandra Street

Mason City – Alan Kading and Gary Slocum

Mason City Alternative – Tammi Jo Holt

Mason City Newman – Joe Burke, Christine Harms, and Jonathan Sheller

Nora Springs-Rock Falls – Alyssa Bradbury

Osage – Curtis Younker

St. Ansgar – April Donahue and Luke Farlinger

The objectives of the Youth Entrepreneurial Academy are to expose students to entrepreneurship, provide students with an opportunity to apply their skills and creativity, help students understand critical thinking skills and give students another career option of being a "job creator" instead of a "job taker."

Joel Rogers, Mortgage Officer for The Loan and Mortgage Network; Pat Galasso, Certified Trainer for Business Planning; and Tim Putnam, Associate Director of the NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneur Center will serve as instructors. Dan Long and Michele Lee, Mason City High School instructors, will serve as counselors during the camp.

Funding for the 2005 Academy is being provided by the NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and the John K. and Luise V. Hanson Foundation.

The John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center is located on the North Iowa Area Community College campus in Mason City, Iowa and provides college level courses and degree programs in entrepreneurship, as well as consulting services for business start-ups and existing industries in the North Iowa region. The Center also provides FastTrac training programs both for beginning companies and existing companies.
