Purpose: This course is designed to update advanced cardiac life support knowledge and skills according to the 2005 AHA guidelines.

Pre-requisites: Successful completion of a BLS Healthcare Provider course within the last 24 months is required. Register early.

Objectives: *Perform and manage the first ten minutes of a witnessed, adult, ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest. *Perform the primary “ABCD” Survey of the cardiac patient including: early access, early CPR, airway management, use of the automatic external defibrillator and conventional defibrillator. *Perform secondary “ABCD” survey of the cardiac patient including: More definitive skills in airway, breathing and circulation with endotracheal intubation, proper ventilation techniques, initiation of IV, use of pharmacological agents, recognition of arrhythmias, and the use of resuscitation algorithms in cardiac arrest management. *Participate in the assessment and team management of the core cases of ACLS: Adult BLS, Pulseless Arrest(Ventricular Fibrillation/Tachycardia, Pulseless Electrical Activity, Asystole), Acute Coronary Syndromes, Bradycardia, Tachycardia(Stable and Unstable) and Stroke. *Describe patient management in the post resuscitation period. *Integrate the AED with adult CPR skills. *Successful completion of this course includes 84% or more on the written examination and verification of skills in 10 cases and CPR/AED.

Important Notice: Precourse reading/preparation is mandatory for this course. Books may be checked out in department/facility or purchased at the NIACC Bookstore at the student's expense. Continuing education hours are contingent upon successful completion of course.
