Purpose: This program is designed to increase the participant's knowledge and understanding of electronic fetal monitoring.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss application of fetal monitoring methods and indications/limitations for use.
  2. Describe the physiology of utero-placental circulation, uterine activity, and affect on the fetus.
  3. Discuss fetal compensatory mechanisms.
  4. Define components of fetal heart rate patterns including baseline, variability, accelerations, and periodic/episodic changes.
  5. Identify appropriate nursing interventions for selected patterns.
  6. Interpret selected EFM tracings using the NICHD terminology.
  7. Describe components of metabolic and respiratory acidosis and possible causes.
  8. Discuss indications, methods, and criteria for antepartum testing.
  9. Discuss the impact of fetal prematurity and environmental factors on fetal heart rate reactivity.
  10. Discuss documentation and legal issues pertaining to documentation.
