Purpose: This program is designed to increase the participant's knowledge and understanding of electronic fetal monitoring.
Objectives:
- Discuss application of fetal monitoring methods and indications/limitations for use.
- Describe the physiology of utero-placental circulation, uterine activity, and affect on the fetus.
- Discuss fetal compensatory mechanisms.
- Define components of fetal heart rate patterns including baseline, variability, accelerations, and periodic/episodic changes.
- Identify appropriate nursing interventions for selected patterns.
- Interpret selected EFM tracings using the NICHD terminology.
- Describe components of metabolic and respiratory acidosis and possible causes.
- Discuss indications, methods, and criteria for antepartum testing.
- Discuss the impact of fetal prematurity and environmental factors on fetal heart rate reactivity.
- Discuss documentation and legal issues pertaining to documentation.
