Emergency Medical Technician--Basic

Audience: Anyone interested in becoming an Iowa Certified EMT-B.

Pre-Requisites: *Must be at least 17 years of age at the time of enrollment. *Be proficient in writing, reading, and speaking English. *Hold or be able to obtain current drivers license. *Be physically and emotionally capable of performing basic emergency care skills. *Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support Course for Health Care Professionals with the American Heart Association. *Physical examination required prior to beginning hospital clinicals.

Purpose: A basic training program developed by the US Department of Transportation to certify Emergency Medical Technicians Basic (EMT-B) in the techniques of emergency medical care within the responsibilities of the EMT-B. The total course consists of 138 hours. Part I includes Modules 1-4 and 6 hours of clinicals. Part II includes Modules 5-7 and 12 hours of clinicals.

Objectives: *Identify the overall roles and responsibilities of the EMT-Basic. *Recognize the nature and seriousness of the patient's condition or extent of injuries to assess requirements for emergency medical care. *Administer appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the patient's condition. *Lift, move, position and otherwise handle the patient to minimize discomfort and prevent further injury. *Perform safely and effectively within expectations of job description.

College Credits: 6 SH

Fee: Approximately $850.00 (includes state practical test) based on North Iowa Area Community College tuition rates. Textbooks and state written certifying test fee additional. Note: Students who wish to bill the cost of their textbooks to an employer or emergency service must present a letter of acknowledgment from that agency.
