North Iowa Area Community College has joined forces with the Community Cares Coalition to expand the focus of the NIACC Job & Internship Fair and create the Career & Community Resource Fair scheduled for March 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the NIACC campus.
“Given the rising unemployment issue in North Iowa we realize we need to make more resources available than just employment to those attending the Fair. We know there are people who have been unemployed for a while and may need access to some of the services our non-profit and governmental communities have to offer,” Terry Schumaker, NIACC Career & Internship Center Director, said.
The idea of joining forces came about during the Coalition’s recent community resources fair, held January 22 at the Family YMCA in Forest City. “The response to the fair was overwhelming and when we saw the number of people coming through we immediately knew the need was so great that we wanted to do another one. The opportunity to partner with NIACC to mix employment opportunities and community resources just fell naturally into place,” Carol Peterson, Winnebago County ISU Extension Director and coalition organizer, said.
As a part of the expanded focus and partnering effort the name of the event the event has changed form the NIACC Career & Internship Fair to the Career & Community Resources Fair.
Fair attendees will have a one-stop opportunity to visit with employers about position openings and to better understand resources that are available to them as they seek employment. Participating business representatives will be available to discuss possible employment opportunities. Agency representatives will be available to discuss solutions to individual circumstances.
The Community Cares Coalition was formed in November to assist North Iowans dealing with job loss. The Coalition is comprised of non-profit, governmental, health and human service agencies; public schools; chamber offices; local businesses; and local churches. A total of 53 different entities make up the coalition.
“This is not just for individuals laid off from one company or from one county. We established this group to assist any one in the North Iowa region who is struggling with the economy, whether they are currently employed or not,” Alex Kuhn, Coalition member of United Way of North Central Iowa, said.
“We think the expanded focus will be a win for everyone involved. NIACC students will have access to employment opportunities and community resources they or their family might need. Participating businesses will gain excellent exposure and access to an abundant applicant pool. Fair attendees from the region will have one central location where they can discuss employment opportunities and explore other resources and benefits available to them,” Nancy Bair, Regional Director of Iowa Workforce Development, said. “We want to make sure that no one slips through the cracks.”
The collaboration between NIACC, the Community Cares Coalition and businesses participating in the event represents the best of North Iowa.
“This collaborative effort will better serve our NIACC students, our communities and our region, especially in the face of our current economic situation,” Schumaker said.
The Career & Community Resources Fair will be held in the NIACC Gymnasium on Wednesday, March 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will be open to NIACC students and the general public at no charge and is coordinated by the NIACC Career and Internship Center.
