{"id":2872,"date":"2022-08-19T08:43:59","date_gmt":"2022-08-19T13:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.niacc.edu\/niacc-minute\/?p=2872"},"modified":"2022-08-19T09:21:18","modified_gmt":"2022-08-19T14:21:18","slug":"packing-for-college-101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.niacc.edu\/niacc-minute\/2022\/08\/packing-for-college-101\/","title":{"rendered":"Packing for College 101"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Packing for college can be tedious.\u00a0 I mean, how does one take their entire life and squeeze it into a tiny little space?\u00a0 It seems impossible, but in reality it&#8217;s exciting &#8211; you are about to begin a whole new adventure!<\/p>\n<p>Campus housing at most colleges average around 12 by 19 feet.\u00a0 This is approximately 228 square feet of actual living space.\u00a0 To put it in perspective, it\u2019s about the size of a one-car garage.<\/p>\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niacc.edu\/student-life\/housing\/\">Campus View Student Housing Complex<\/a> was built on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niacc.edu\">NIACC<\/a> campus, it positively changed the way students live, play and study.\u00a0 Completed in 2015, there are several different suite options to fit your lifestyle and interests.<\/p>\n<p>Still, when it comes time to pack for your big move, the task can seem a bit daunting.\u00a0 What do I need? What DON\u2019T I need? How many towels are appropriate? Or pairs of underwear?<\/p>\n<p>Here is a helpful list of tips and tricks to ensure you have everything you need to feel the comforts of home as you begin your journey as a college student and into adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>A good rule of thumb when you begin packing is to divide the items into categories.\u00a0 This will keep your thoughts concise and organized when packing.\u00a0 Popular headings are: Room Needs\/Storage, Linens\/Laundry Supplies, Office\/Desk Supplies, Electronics, Toiletries, Clothing, Household\/Kitchen Items, Shared Items (with roommates), and Miscellaneous.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s break it down by category.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Room Needs\/Storage <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>These are things like a bedside lamp, alarm clock, trash can, fan, dry-erase wall calendar, mini toolkit, picture hangers and storage bins. Another option here might be a drying rack for laundry if you have some items that can\u2019t sustain the dryer.\u00a0 Ask your mom on this one.\u00a0 She might air-dry more of your clothes than you realize!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Linens\/Laundry Supplies<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The obvious items in this category are sheets and pillowcases, towels, blankets and pillows. Anything you need to make your bed feel like home \u2013 bring it!\u00a0 For the laundry portion, make sure you have a laundry basket or something to hold and transport both dirty and clean clothes, hangers, detergent and stain remover.\u00a0 The two most forgotten items in this section are a lint brush and a mini sewing kit.\u00a0 You might not know how to sew, but You Tube can show you how!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Office\/Desk Supplies<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Anything you need for the learning part of school falls into this category. There\u2019s the obvious notebooks, pens, pencils and folders.\u00a0 But don\u2019t forget sticky notes, index cards, highlighters, tape, scissors and a stapler for your desk.\u00a0 Also, you might not think you\u2019ll need these, but I guarantee you will at some point \u2013 stamps and envelopes!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Electronics<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In today\u2019s day and age, this category is fairly straightforward. Computer, printer, HDMI cord, headphones, phone and ipad are a must.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget to throw in a surge protector and AT LEAST 2 extension cords!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Toiletries<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Again, this one seems like a no-brainer as it includes all the things you would need to get ready each day. What you might not think of, however, are all those products only used every now and then.\u00a0 Yup, they fall into this category too.\u00a0 Things like vitamins and medicines, band-aids, tweezers and cotton swabs are often overlooked.\u00a0 Make sure to add them to your list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clothing <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>You do not need to bring every stitch of clothing you own! This is a big one. Obviously, bring the essentials for the appropriate season, but I guarantee you\u2019ll make at least one visit back home before the weather changes.\u00a0 Plan accordingly!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Household\/Kitchen Items<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>At NIACC Student Housing, you can enjoy home-cooked cuisine through the various meal plans. Still, it\u2019s not a bad idea to keep a few essentials in your room.\u00a0 One bowl, plate and cup will suffice, including silverware.\u00a0 Things like paper towels, dish soap, trash bags and lightbulbs fall into this category as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shared Items (with roommate)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>You don\u2019t BOTH need to bring a television, small refrigerator or a coffee maker. The best way to introduce yourself to your new living partner is to divvy up the big items and decide who will bring what!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Miscellaneous<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Earplugs \u2013 trust me, if you don\u2019t have them, you\u2019ll wish you did.
