Reverse Transfer
If you transfer from NIACC to 4-year college or university without completing your Associate Degree, reverse transfer may be an option for you.
The reverse transfer process allows a student to transfer to a 4-year institution and then transfer back credits to complete their unfinished NIACC degree. NIACC will then evaluate the credits to determine if the student’s degree requirements have now been met and, if so, will award the credential.
Am I Eligible?
In order to participate in this program, students must have completed at least 30 s.h. of transferable credit at NIACC. Participating in the reverse transfer program does not guarantee that a degree or credential will be granted.
Benefits of Reverse Transfer
Why bother with transferring back credits to NIACC?
- Earn an additional credential with little to no effort, especially if you have to take the classes for your Bachelor’s anyways.
- An Associate’s Degree may allow you to meet the general education requirements at your four-year institution, streamlining your path forward and reducing the number of credits you need to take.
- Make progress on your Bachelor’s Degree while finishing up your Associate’s degree.
- Show employers and other colleges what you’ve accomplished already.
- Enhance your resume and improve hireability now while still working towards future goals.
How to Sign up for Reverse Transfer
If you would like to pursue reverse transfer, indicate your interest at the time of application to the 4-year institution. In doing so, you agree to have your university transcript automatically sent to NIACC to be evaluated for transfer credit.
If you are already at another 4-year institution, contact a NIACC advisor to find out what you may need to complete your Associate’s degree and then request that your current institution sends your transcripts to NIACC.
Planning for Reverse Transfer
Transferring soon? Talk to your NIACC advisor about what you need to finish your Associate’s degree. Transfer in Iowa has created a Reverse Credit Transfer Worksheet that you can work on with a NIACC advisor and then share with your advisor at your 4-year institution so you can create a schedule that finishes your Associate’s degree while working towards your Bachelor’s.
