NIACC to Receive Funding Through Iowa STRONG Workforce Training Initiative
North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) will receive $528,237 through Iowa STRONG, a statewide initiative supported by a $10.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The initiative will help NIACC expand short-term workforce training opportunities aligned with the needs of North Iowa employers in high-demand industries, including advanced manufacturing, construction and skilled trades, and healthcare.
Iowa STRONG, which stands for Systems, Training, and Resources for Opportunity, Navigation, and Growth, brings together Iowa’s community colleges and workforce partners to strengthen training opportunities and address workforce needs across the state. NIACC’s funding will support program development, alignment with Workforce Pell Grant requirements, and the development of institutional processes for data tracking, reporting, and funding disbursement.
“The Iowa STRONG initiative is a significant investment in Iowa’s workforce and economic future. NIACC is proud to be part of a statewide effort that expands access to high-quality, employer-aligned training opportunities that lead to meaningful careers. By strengthening workforce pathways and responding to industry demand, we can help individuals build the skills needed for success while supporting the talent needs of businesses across North Iowa,” said Patti Hanson, Vice President of Continuing Education & Economic Development at NIACC.
The statewide initiative aims to develop more than 50 training programs eligible for Workforce Pell Grants by 2030. These programs will provide shorter, career-focused educational opportunities while potentially expanding access to federal financial aid for eligible students.
By working with employers to identify workforce needs, NIACC can help connect individuals with training that prepares them for employment while supporting businesses seeking qualified workers. The initiative will also strengthen pathways for individuals looking to enter the workforce, advance in their current careers, or gain new skills.
The Iowa STRONG project is funded through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grants program. Hawkeye Community College will oversee statewide implementation, with NIACC and Northeast Iowa Community College also receiving funding through the initiative.
