NIACC Book Sale to Benefit Emergency Textbook Fund, October 7-9
The NIACC Foundation and NIACC Library will host a three-day book sale October 7-9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Activity Center on the North Iowa Area Community College campus. The sale is open to the public and all are welcome.
The sale boasts over 1,000 books of all genres for book enthusiasts to browse, all with a low price tag: only 50 cents for paperbacks and $1 for hardcovers. The selection is an even split between fiction and nonfiction, with a small section of children’s books. All proceeds from the sale event go toward NIACC’s Emergency Textbook Fund.
The Emergency Textbook Fund is available to cover some or all of the cost of course materials – like textbooks, access codes, or lab materials – when difficult financial situations arise. “Access to textbooks and course materials is fundamental to student achievement, and ensuring this access removes a significant barrier to completing their education,” said Andrea Mujica, Assistant Director of the Foundation.
The definition of an emergency is necessarily flexible. “We’ve covered books because of deaths in the family, theft, house fires, medical bills, needing to prioritize other expenses, and everything in between,” said Mujica.
“We do what we can to keep textbook prices low, but the publishing industry has more of a say than we do,” said Rhonda Nesheim-Kauffman, Director of the Library and Bookstore at NIACC. “The fund makes sure that the unexpected doesn’t stop students from getting what they need to succeed.”
In addition to the book sale, the Foundation will also hold a silent auction for around 50 pieces of artwork and photography. Rounding out the event is a prize drawing for gift cards from Mason City’s local bookstore, Three Bell Books, making the NIACC book sale a “must attend” occasion for all book lovers.
