Check out our website for upcoming concerts, information about our membership, audition schedule, rehearsal schedules, and concert dates. We are sponsored by North Iowa Area Community College and all rehearsals are held in the NIACC Vocal Music Room in Mason City, Iowa, at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evenings from September-April.
Exciting news! NIACC offers college credit for membership in NICS and continuing education credit for members in the vocal education community under the direction of Adjunct Instructor/Director, Linda Ferjak.
North Iowa Choral Society was founded in 1994 under the direction of Robert A. Davis and is a semi-professional audition-only SATB adult choral group – one of the “faces” of NIACC. The group performs both sacred and secular music from various genres (classics, spirituals, musical theatre, jazz, swing, blues, etc.) in various venues. The group has performed at Iowa Choral Directors Conventions, the Choral Symposium, KCMR Live Christmas Concerts, Waldorf Performing Arts Series, and as seasoned performers in NIACC’s Performing Arts Series in concert with Shirley Jones in 2002 and biennial Candlelight Christmas Concerts.
In the 2001-2002 season, Jayson Ryner became the director and assumed leadership of the vocal music program at NIACC. Rick and Melodie Chitty took over as Co-Directors of the Choral Society in 2008-2009 season and continued through 2009-2010. Co-Directors Blair Buffington and Travis Beck took over the group this year in the 2010/2011 season. Exciting news in 2011/2012 is that NIACC has hired as Adjunct Instructor, Linda Ferjak, as the new Choral Society Director. Also available through NIACC are credit hours for college students and continuing education credit for area vocal teachers who require continuing education accredited hours. The Choral Society is an adult auditioned choir that rehearses on Sunday evenings from September through April from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the NIACC vocal music room.
Linda M. Ferjak is a graduate of Wartburg College (BME) and the University of Northern Iowa (MM). She is a lifetime resident of Iowa having completed her thirty-seventh year of teaching music in Iowa schools. She has taught in Woden Elementary School, Klemme High School, Sentral Community School, Oxford Junction Consolidated Schools, and has 18 years experience as Director of Vocal Music at Forest City High School.
She is presently Director of Vocal Music in Grades 7-12 at Bishop Garrigan in Algona, Iowa. High school choirs under Ferjak’s direction have earned multiple Division I ratings in both large and small group contests, performed for numerous church and community events, and have represented their schools in the Iowa All State Chorus. Her choirs have sung in St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington D.C., Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, and Our Lady of Guadalupe in New York City.
In 2005 she was co-director of the North Iowa Youth Chorale as they participated in a Carnegie Hall residency performance and was the guest conductor for the North Central District Honor Choir and the Iowa OPUS Honor Choir (both 7/8 Treble Choirs) in Fall 2012. Ferjak is an Adjudicator for the Iowa High School Music Association serving both large and small group competitions. She has also served as a mentor for first year music teachers through the North Central District of ICDA and has directed church choirs and community choirs in several communities over her lifetime of teaching.
